Termbase lookup : only display a source term when I click on it

Dear Trados Studio developers,

Regarding term recognition in the editor, there used to be a great feature in the Workbench (yes, that was a long time ago!): you could simply click on the red line above a term and the termbase recognition panel would instantly show that term (only that term, not all terms). This was one of the best features of the Workbench, and then... it disappeared.

The current approach, which is to display ALL terms in a segment, is very time-consuming when you have a very large termbase [50000+ terms]: it usually takes several seconds to display, which is really disproportionate, and what's more, the term recognition panel starts from the 1st term in the source segment, followed by many, many terms (can be 30) where you have to find the term you are looking for (by the way, the hotkey for "term search" doesn't help, as there is a bug in this feature).

I just hope that someone will read my prose...

Thanks!
Olivier

  • Hi all,

I have deleted everything I wrote because it seems to be upsetting so many people.

In all my years beta testing since Studio and MultiTerm were first created and before, I don't remember angering anyone before.

BTW I don't work for RWS, I'm just a user who happens to be fortunate enough to have had no problems in all these years that I couldn't resolve with or without help.

    All the best to all

  • Dear Alison,

It would have been nice to ask before "deleting evertyhing". There were interesting ideas in my suggestions and we could all have edited our thread to soften our discussion and leaving the good ideas for reference...

    Have a nice day.

  • Hi Olivier,

I just wanted to defuse the situation because someone described it as a 'battle' which horrified me.

My intention was only to remove what I had written. Did some of your comments disappear also? If so, I'm sorry. I must have omitted to untick 'Delete Children'. Oh dear.

    Maybe  could restore your comments?

    All the best,

  • No worries. My previous posts need to be edited anyway. I'll rewrite something simple, factual and neutral so that the elements I added to detail my idea are not lost.

    Alll the best,

    Olivier

  • Hi again

Thank you for being so understanding!

I hadn't noticed that your very long post/s disappeared. I know it must have taken you a long time to write, I feel awful for accidentally deleting it... Maybe someone still has the email with your contribution in it?

    Anybody?

    All the best,

    Ali Slight smile

  • At the risk of being otiose, I have copied the almost-complete sequence, barring, I think, Alison's original statement. I reproduce the sequence unedited below:

Maybe the whole list of terms in the term recognition panel could remain as it is now, but clicking on a term in the source segment could scroll the list to the desired term.

I think this feature ought to be incorporated alongside the listing of terms in the dedicated window: I find clicking on the term in that window to insert it is also very useful. A fair breeze to this…

    Dear Alison,

I don't see a problem if 2 people have possible contradictions in their statements, even if I don't see this contradiction. Oliver would like a function back, and there seems to have been such a change. Apparently a backward step according to Oliver.

Can you tell me of any other change to the Term Recognition window in the last 20 years? While a lot has changed and most things have improved in Trados Studio, term recognition is apparently NOT a priority.

And I would like to be taken seriously:

Apart from the fact that terms are very often NOT displayed (in one segment they are, in another they are not) - adding information, definitions etc. is very limited. As soon as the text is too long, it disappears behind the next entry.

And: have you ever noticed that - if such information is stored - it is displayed in a tooltip completely in one line across the entire screen? Without wrapping. And that this tooltip disappears after a very short time?

The display of images is also far from helpful. You have to click to go to the terbase window and the picture there is far too small to recognize something.

So the Term Recongnition window is definitely no better than it was back in 2007. Unfortunately! So where's the priority here?

The only thing I have to reproach myself for is that I haven't found the time to write down all the grievances and document them clearly here in the forum

But I have often spoken to Trados employees about this and hoped for every update, only to be disappointed every time.

If "term management is better now than it ever was back then", than all credit goes to Gerhard Kordmann and his Glossary Converter.

Me I am not talking about Studio MultiTerm itself, but about the Term Recongnition Window.

    Best regards

    Burim

I have been fighting for years for the Term Recognition Window to finally arrive in modern times. But unfortunately it still remains the same as in TagEditor from 2007 and earlier. Absolutely incomprehensible. But I have given up.

I think it impolitic to savage a hard-pressed contributor's suggestion, since the plea stems from his need.

Regarding TagEditor, I have kept my Trados 2007 software active precisely because of the virtues of TagEditor: it cuts its way through parts lists like a hot knife through butter, and handles footnotes as to the manner born. I have a dummy TM in Workbench format for these uses, without prejudice to my cherished 2022 Studio.

Sorry to bung all this stuff at you, Dear Colleagues, but it endorses a heartfelt wish.

I would venture to add that it is high time to launch a beta 64-bit Studio version for us to cut our teeth on.

With kind regards to you all, including the development team, and Alison Slight smile!
