Two versions installed: can I eliminate the older one?

Hello!

Just a small technical question: I am using Trados 2021, but I realized that I still have also the older 2019 version installed. Since ?m gaving disk space problems, can I disinstall version 2019 without affecting version 2021?

Thanks for a tip

Valeria

  • Hi Jerzy, thank you again for your advice. In fact, I have only 16.9 GB of free disc space left, so that might be a problem. I will take my PC to the engineers to fix that. And I will try to learn how to work online with this new version.
But tell me, why I do not have my 2021 version downloadable anymore in my SDL account? I paid for it and I could keep it together with this newer version, couldn't I?

Your disk space is critical. Most probably you need a new hard disk or a new computer.

Please read the answer from Paul regarding your installations. He has explained in detail what you have and how to use it.

  • Ok Paul, sorry and thank you for the very clear explanations. In fact, I was looking under the tab LICENSES & SUBSCRIPTIONS, rather than in the DOWNLOADS tab.
So everything's clear now. I only hope RWS is going to fix the issue of the window stuck on top as soon as possible! (I know how to open and close it, it's just more and more clicks... ANyway, I certainly can NOT use AutoHotkey without specific directions.)

THANK YOU again to both, Jerzy and Paul, and I hope I won't need to bother you anymore about this. Valeria

  • Jerzy, I checked again and this morning I have 24 GB available. Don't ask me why. I am not an IS expert, as you may have seen over the last few days... :-))) anyway, maybe I need more memory or a new laptop, I will consider it. Thanks again!!

You definitely need more disk space. If you are using a laptop, the file for hibernation will be more than 20 GB. Windows also dumps information on your HDD, usually something about 4 GB. And bear in mind, that the tmp folder (C:\Users\Your_username\AppData\Local\Temp) may contain several GB of unnecessary stuff too. And with some big Windows updates the old version is kept on the HDD, which takes further GBs... So the minimal size of a HDD needed nowadays would be 500 GB or more. 256 is just enough for Windows and programs, but not for any data you produce with your work. And as the prices of HDDs are cheap as never before, I would go for 1 TB (or more, if you can afford).

you posted on so many different places about this issue it’s hard to keep track!

I did create some instructions and a video to help you and posted it here:

Valeria Maria Tafel I managed to create an AHK version 2 script to solve this which I added to the original post here: RE: Studio 2022 Find/Replace dialog box is always displayed on top All you need…

It may be that you just need to move some of your user files onto a backup drive perhaps? You can pick up a reasonable SSD drive that holds terabytes of data for a couple of hundred euros.  I ran a check on my own work machine last week as I was running low and realised I had over a 100 Gb of files related to Studio projects and I don’t even translate! They don’t need to be on there so in my case I just deleted them, but you could move them into a backup drive and save shelling out for a new laptop unles you think it’s time to upgrade anyway.

Taking from here, if you buy an external M2 SSD HDD, you can even use it for storing working files, as it will be fast enough. You can buy Samsung 990 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD 1 TB for less than 100 EUR and put it into a housing for roughly 30 EUR to have a really fast HDD with one TB capacity.

  • Yes, I would like to know how to free space without causing damages, as I did with Trados last week.
What/where is the "file for hibernation"? It is something I could get rid of?
As to the Temp folder, I found it: can I simply delete all its content (and from the bin) safely?
And how to eliminate old unnecessary Windows versions?
I could get rid of all these things in the meantime... and then go for a 1 TB disc. My present disc has only 250 GB, I'm afraid!

You should not touch any Windows files like the hibernation one. This is used for quicker start of your computer.

Make sure all your work in Studio is saved. Then please close Studio and ALL other programs. Then you can safely delete all files from the tmp folder. Bear in mind, that Windows will not let you delete some of these, so just let them be.

As I do not know the language of your operating system, I don't know the name of the Windows utility to remove unnecessary files from your drive. In German it is called "Datenträgerbereinigung". When you find it in your operating system, it will be the best solution to create some free space on your HDD. This is it in German:

Disk Cleanup utility window for drive C: showing potential files to delete such as Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Offline Webpages, and others. A total of up to 1.05 GB can be freed. The 'Clean up system files' button is at the bottom.

Chose "Systemdateien bereinigen". This will allow you also to remove unnecessary old Windows updates.
