Trados Studio 2024 does not open anymore

Hi everyone,

I have a very big issue with Trados Studio 2024.
Some days ago I have tried to update to SR1 18.1.2.6370, but had to revert to 18.0.2.3255 because it did not open my ongoing projects (had to do the same procedure on 2 different PC's).
Now I have decided to install the update once again.
At first the update seemed to be ok.
I opened a new .sdlppx package.
After that Trados was not able to display the Termbase and got stuck.
Then I had to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to close the application.

Now as I try to restart Trados, it doesn't open, i.e. I see the initial screen with the version number but it closes after a couple of seconds. It does not even appear in the Task Manager of Windows. It seems that the application cannot be loaded by the system.
I have tried to repair, uninstall the application, revert to 18.0.2.3255 with no results.

Now I cannot work. I have never experienced a situation like this before, I have always had no problems.
I am currently working on a Windows 10 machine.

    thanks to your suggestion to reset Trados to its initial state I managed to solve the problem.
    Now everything seems working fine.

    How does this come? Deleting the folders I suggested should have done exactly the same. So why did it not help?

    The reset to initial state involved more than those folders:

    For Trados Studio 2024 and 2022:
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Trados - rename the Trados Studio folder

    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Trados - rename the Trados Studio folder

    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents - rename the Studio [version] folder to Studio [version]_old

    Dear Anca, I missed this folder: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Trados

    I do not remember seeing this in previous versions. Thank you for the clarification.

    Hi Anca,

    I am having the same issue but the above workaround is not working for me

    any other idea?

    I have the latest version of 2024 and i just upgraded a plug in and added the power pack before it stopped working

    Hi everybody,

    I just updated my Studio 2024 to Trados Studio 2024 SR1 - 18.1.2.6370, and I experimented the same problem when trying to launch Studio. The splash screen appeared, all the initialisation routines run, then Studio stopped working.

    As suggested above (but it is not the first time I have to do that since my first versions of Studio for resolving multiple issues), I renamed the "C:\Users\PhR\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18" folder as "…\Studio18_OLD", then launched again Studio.
    It recreated a new …\Studio2018 folder, with new settings files.

    Unlike what is suggested above, I did not do the process for the "18" folder, since it contains all my plugins, some of which have custom settings. I did not want to have to set them again if it was not necessary. It would still be time to do it later if Studio still does not work.

    And my guess was right, renaming only the Studio18 folder was enough : Studio started normally. Then I stopped it, retrieved my UserSettings.xml file from the Studio18_OLD folder and copied it into the new Studio18 folder. Here again, I did not want to re-enter manually all my custom settings.

    Everything works fine now, and I did not lose any custom settings.

    I just want to include below a log of the issue before I do the process described above in case it may help the developers:

    Source: a corrupted or out-of-date ribbon customisation setting in %APPDATA%\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18.

    Evidence from your log:

    • Fatal during UI build:
      SerializationException: Expected 'RibbonGroupLocation'… Found 'RibbonGroupLocationAttribute' while DataContractSerializer reads a setting, then CreateViewRibbonTab → CreateDefaultCommandBars → StudioWindow.Init.
      This is the ribbon/command-bar customisation pipeline, not core services.

    • Earlier NullReferenceException on EditorController is a knock-on while the shell is half-built.

    • Plugins were untouched. Renaming only Studio18 fixed it, so the fault is in user settings under that folder, not binaries under 18.

    Why your workaround worked:

    • Deleting Studio18 forced Studio SR1 to regenerate UI settings with the new schema. Copying back only UserSettings.xml did not reintroduce the bad ribbon customisation file, so Studio launched.

    Likely culprit file(s):

    • A ribbon/command-bar customisation settings file under Studio18 (names vary by build, e.g. a settings entry for Sdl.Desktop.Platform.CommandBars.Extensions). The element rename from RibbonGroupLocationAttribute to RibbonGroupLocation in SR1 makes older data incompatible.

    That makes sense, as long as I am qualified to judge of it.
    Actually, I do not remember having customized the ribbon bar (except, maybe, the quick access ribbon). Or a complement or plug-in may have done it... I could not say...

    I understand that the issue was in another file than UserSettings.xml under \Studio18. Maybe in one of those two files: Philippe Riondel.sdlprofile or PhrR.sdlProfile, that were in a \UserProfiles subfolder (with a modification date as of today, after the update time). There are no such files in the \UserProfiles subfolder of the newly created \Studio18 folder. Maybe those files were just a kind of settings backup done by the updating process.

    Also, I am convinced since a while that AI would be great at monitoring any application processes to analyze and help solve issues. It would do it thousands times faster than any human.
