About Translation Memory & Automated Translation options

Welcome everyone in 2016!

Today you will find some info about the Translation Memory and Automated Translation options available in the SDL Trados Studio Options

Please note that this post provides information that can be found also in the SDL Trados Studio - Online Product Help and is just a summary. The information provided in the Online Help is usually updated and I am recommending to search there for latest information or changes if you feel like.
Also note that this post will probably be available in the SDL Knowledge Base shortly ;)
Lets start....

You can use the Translation Memory and Automated Translation settings to specify:

  • What project translation memories and automated translations are applied to files.

  • Whether these are included in look-ups and concordance searching.

  • Whether the translation memory will be updated with the translated content from the document(s).

These settings appear in multiple dialog boxes in SDL Trados Studio. Click here for more information about finding the appropriate dialog box.

Box/Button

Description

Use different translation providers for this language direction. This option is only displayed if you are viewing this page under the individual language pair settings and not the All Language Pairs level. Typically, you select your translation memories at the All Language Pairs level. Only select this option if you want to specify translation memory selections at the individual language pair level as an exception. You may want to do this if you want to:
  • Use different translation memories for a particular language pair.

  • Use a different order of the translation memories in the cascade for a particular language pair.

  • Enable lookups, updates or concordance searching differently in that translation memory for a particular language pair.

NOTE

This check box does not enable or disable any of the settings on the Search, Penalties, Filters, Update or Language Resources pages below.

Add

Click this and select the translation memories and automated translation servers you want to add to the project:

  • File-based Translation Memory - Select this to add a translation memory that is stored locally in a file. The Open Translation Memory dialog box is displayed. Browse to the location of the file, select it and click Open.

  • Server-based Translation Memory - Select this to add a translation memory stored on a server. The Select Server-based Translation Memory dialog box is displayed where you can connect to a server and select the translation memories.

  • Select SDL BeGlobal Enterprise to connect to an SDL BeGlobal automated translation server. Use the SW Enterprise Translation Server option if your company has purchased an installation of Language Weaver Enterprise Translation Server and installed it on a server. Use the BeGlobal Online option if you or your company has purchased he BeGlobal hosted services (Software as a Service). This requires a user and API key for authentication.

  • SDL Language Cloud to connect to the machine translation engines that you subscribed from your SDL Language Cloud account. The SDL Language Cloud MT engines are trained using domain-specific content to generate translation results that typically require less post-editing.

  • Google Translate - Select this to connect to the Google Translate automated translation server. This is now a paid for service that requires an API key. The API key you enter here will update all other projects that use Google Translate.

  • Select one of the AnyTM options for local or server based TMs if you want to use a translation memory with languages that differ from the ones in your project.

  • SDL WorldServer Translation Memory - Click Add and select SDL WorldServer from the drop-down list. Select a translation memory or translation memory group.

NOTE

Using Google Translate, SDL Language Cloud or an SDL Automated Translation Server may violate your non-disclosure agreement with your translation customer. Check with your customer before connecting to these translation providers. The *.sdlxliff bilingual file records if you have used one of these providers during translation.
