I checked the DeepL website for supported languages and dont see either Chinese or Japanese.

It might be worth contacting DeepL directly to double check.

Thanks for your reply. You checked the DeepL FAQs, right? Please have a look at the blog posts on the DeepL website. Just two days ago DeepL announced that it's now possible to translate into and out of PT-BR. On 19th of March they added JA and ZH to the languages. And when you use the the online translator on the website you can also use JA and ZH. So, they do provide these languages.

Steve, myself and a developer took a look this morning and the problem is that DeepL don't use an API to dynamically allow the plugin to add new languages automatically. This means we have to release new versions of the plugin whenever they add new languages.  This is fine... but they don't specifically tell us when they're added, and we don't sit and watch DeepL to see what they're doing!

So thank you for bringing this to our attention.  We took a look at their documentation today and see that they now make it possible to support these languages through the plugin:

So, we'll update the plugin with the additional hardcoded languages in due course and issue a new release when it's complete and tested.  You can get a notification for this the following ways:

We actually completed the changes today but found some problems coming from DeepL.  So we contacted them and this is what we have been told:

Please note that Japanese and Chinese cannot be integrated in CAT tools yet. That is the reason why, contrarily to Russian and Portuguese back then, I haven’t contacted you yet so that you could add these languages in advance. Tag handling is still not possible for Japanese or Chinese.

I would then ask to bear with us and wait still a bit until a full integration of these languages is ready, in order to avoid many problems in translation. Thank you for your patience. I will contact you asap to let you know.

So, once DeepL have advised us that they are ready to support these languages in a CAT tool we will release the update.

I think the original post from  was spot on and this serves as a good example of why you cannot compare what you are seeing in the web browser with what you are getting from the plugin.  The solution is different, the requirements are different and we have several technologies to consider in discovering where problems may come from.

Thank you very much for keeping us up to date regarding the integration of the new languages in the plugin.

Since the lack of tag handling only seems to concern Chinese and Japanese, would it be possible to already integrate Brasilian Portuguese? Or would you rather intergrate all three new languages when the tag issue for Chinese and Japanese is resolved?

The DeepL team have actually published an endpoint we were not aware of that may be something we can use to make the plugin aware of any new languages published without having to update the plugin. So we'll look at this in due course.  Once implemented newly available languages will automagically appear as they are released for use in a CAT tool.
