DeepL does not work with Trados Studio 2017 + plug-in

I recently installed Trados Studio 2017, DeepL and the corresponding plug-in for DeepL, but no DeepL results are being produced.  This is a view of the "Project Settings" screen, after I have selected a translation memory and  the DeepL Provider.

Screenshot of RWS AppStore Applications Project Settings showing Translation Memory and Machine Translation section with 'SCB_DE-GB.sdlm' and 'DeepL Translation provider' listed.

And this is a view of the Editor screen, were the results of the SCB translation memory are visible, but there are no DeepL results and there is no indication that DeepL is working.

Screenshot of Trados Studio Editor with 'SCB_DE-GB' Translation Memory results displayed, but no visible results from DeepL Translation provider.

I would very much appreciate help as soon as possible.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Stephane

  • Hello Paul,

Thanks for your quick response.  In the meantime I have solicited the help of DeepL Support and they have sent me a message saying that they will reply in a few days and that at the moment they are very busy.

If I understand correctly, all you need to work with DeepL integrated in Trados Studio is the plug-in and the DeepL authentication (API) key (after you have paid the subscription fee) has to be activated/entered. Is that right? It seems that no separate DeepL software needs to be downloaded from the DeepL website. On my DeepL account I can see the authentication key but am wondering what I need to do with it. How is it activated or where does it need to be entered?

I was working with Trados Studio 2017, the corresponding DeepL plug-in and a DeepL Advanced subscription previously when my hard drive failed and I lost all my data and programs.  Hence the need (after installing a new hard drive) to download an instance of Trados Studio 2017 and the corresponding plug-in again, which I have done.  Only it's not working.

It does not seem that this problem is related to the issue you mentioned, and I have deactivated the SCB TM in the "Project Settings" window (see screenshot above), as you suggested, but this has not helped.

I would be grateful for any further advice.

    Best regards,

I think it might be.  The 2017 plugin is pretty old and we will have certainly addressed this with the later supported versions.

On my DeepL account I can see the authentication key but am wondering what I need to do with it. How is it activated or where does it need to be entered?

Once you add DeepL to your settings you will see in the interface a field where your API key goes.

  • Good afternoon Paul,

Thanks for your reply.   In the meantime I have tried re-entering the authentication key (this is done when you select the DeepL Provider in the Project Settings window) but the DeepL machine translation is still not working.  And I have received no help from DeepL Support, despite two requests.

Could you please explain to me what exactly I should do.  The explanations given on the page you have linked are rather complicated, to say the least, and judging from the performance of the DeepL Support service so far, I have little hope of solving the problem with them.  Would it be easier if I upgraded to the latest version of Trados Studio and then downloaded the DeepL plug-in for this version?

Many thanks in advance for your support.

I don't think you will be able to resolve this with them as long as you are working on old software.  The important part of their documentation is this bit:

    =================

What happens if a user continues to use a deprecated cipher suite?

If you continue to use one of the cipher suites we’re deprecating, you won’t be able to access the DeepL API. This means that, for example, CAT tool plugins would no longer work properly.

    =================

The Trados 2027 plugin is really too old, and it will not be updated.  So this means it falls into the category of being depracated.

Would it be easier if I upgraded to the latest version of Trados Studio and then downloaded the DeepL plug-in for this version?

Yes... but probably only if you are using a modern version of Windows as well (W10 or W11 for example), or you might fall foul of this same problem there as well.  Upgrading will also mean you get a more advanced version of the plugin that in addition to some new features also supports DeepL glossaries (make sure you read the documentation on the appstore for that).

  • Hello again Paul,

It seems that my best option is to upgrade from Trados Studio 2017 to Trados Studio 2024, for which a corresponding DeepL plug-in is available. However, is this possible?  When I do an online search for instructions for this,  I get  following information:
"Deactivate your current Trados Studio 2022/ 2021/2019 license(s) Go to your Trados Studio application....."
    See here:      www.trados.com/.../
No mention is made of Trados Studio 2017 in these instructions.
Can you please also inform me about the meaning of  "7.0.5.0" in "7.0.5.0 - Trados Studio 2024"  - see   https://appstore.rws.com/Plugin/24?tab=releases.   Does this number refer to the Trados Studio version of the DeepL plug-in version?
It seems that I need to de-install TS 2017 before downloading and installing TS 2024 (Freelance). Could you please provide instructions on how to how to do this.  This too seems to be a very complicated process.

    Many thanks in advance.

No surprise... you won't even find an upgrade to 2024 in the store because this path was closed a long time ago.  You can only purchase 2024 as a new purchase and this simplifies things for you.   Don't deactivate anything related to 2017.  Just purchase 2024, install and licence it, and it will run happily alongside 2017.

No, this refers to the version of the plugin.  But you won't need to think about that at all.  2024 is integrated to the appstore so you will just go here in Trados Studio:

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the RWS AppStore welcome view with a search bar containing the keyword 'deepl'. Below are listed installed plug-ins including 'DeepL Translation Provider' highlighted as a free app by Trados AppStore Team.

    1. click on the welcome view
    2. click on RWS AppStore in the navigation pane of the welcome view
    3. Click on AppStore in the integrated appstore view
    4. type deepl into the search
    5. select the app shown and click on the small download icon to the right of the number 5 I added (or click the "Install" button on the bottom right)

You'll be notified when the download is complete (couple of seconds) and you restart Studio.  That's it.  The integration will ensure you only get the right version of the plugin.

  • Hello Paul,

Thanks for this useful information. In the meantime, on the advice of one of your colleagues, I have downloaded and am installing the trial version of Trados Studio 2024. Am hoping that I will get the permanent version for a promotional price before the trial period runs out in 30 days. I am presently viewing the introductory video that comes with the software and have not yet got around to integrating the DeepL plug-in.  I hope to do so this evening following your instructions.
Many thanks and have a good weekend.

If you use the trial the integration may not work for you as you need to sign in. But you can download from the AppStore and double-click the sdlplugin to install it.

the one to select will be obvious after you click on download as it’ll say 2024.
