italics

Greetings,

Now and then we come across lengthy documents containing long lists of latin words.

As these are often in separate TU's one would expect to find a filter where one could filter all "italic only" TU's, copy source to target, confirm and thus be rid of them.

I have done some research but have not come across any easy way of doing this within Studio.

If anyone out there has any tips or tricks on this issue, pray enlighten me.

  • Hi Reynir,

Although it is not well designed, the Advanced Display Filter (found in the View ribbon) might help.

The Advanced Display Filter filters on tag text (whether you want it to or not).

Generally the italic tag is "<cf italic=True>", so you could try filtering for part of the text in this tag, such as "italic", or "italic=True". You might miss segments if you try filtering on the entire tag, i.e. "<cf italic=True>", as the italic attribute might be in a tag along with other attributes, like font size or font name.

Unfortunately this will not find segments that are completely in italic, since the italic tag will then be hidden in the content between segments.

And, unfortunately once again, the "Advanced Display Filter" does not filter properly when you chose "Show All Content" under "General" in the Filter Attributes tab.

Instead of just showing inter-segment content that contains the string "italic", the Advanced Display Filter displays All of the content between segments, regardless of whether it includes the string "italic".

So it looks like you can locate your segments if the text they contain is not completely italic.

  • Hi Bruce,

I am unable to find the Advanced Display Filter under the View ribbon (see scrnshot)

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the View ribbon with no Advanced Display Filter option visible. The Review tab is highlighted with a Search function displayed.

However, under Review there is a Search function but alas with no regular expression possibility.

  • Hi Reynir,

I am not sure when the Advanced Display Filter first appeared, and whether it originally included filtering on tag text :-(

I only know that this is what is available in the up-to-date Studio 2017. Are you using an earlier version?

The filter function on the Review ribbon actually does filter on regular expressions. It does so by default, which can also cause confusion if you are not expecting this or you do not know anything about regular expressions (which I imagine is true for some translators). For example, if you are searching for a period "." or a parenthesis "(", you have to use "\." or "\(" in the filter box on the Review ribbon.

But the filter on the Review ribbon does not filter on tag text, so it is useless for your purposes.

-- Yes, it is a bit confusing that the filter on the Review ribbon does not filter on tag text and the Advanced Display Filter does filter on tag text whether you want it to or not, and neither of the filters gives you any idea that such a difference exists, but that is the current state of affairs in Studio 2017.
