When you are active in a segment, look at the bottom right of your SDL Trados Studio screen.
Depending on file type, we could also see if the contextual pane can show character counts.

Just a tip... if you use Autohotkey there is a great solution for counting segment characters... in fact for counting chars in any application at all.
The scripts is here:
community.rws.com/.../counting-characters-in-a-segment
So if you need a little more than the good solution from Lydia it might be helpful.
