Machine Translation limit reached

"Machine Translation limit reached." - I got this message, but I used 160,000 characters this month according to the SDL MT Cloud website's report. And I know that I haven't used that much this month as a free lancer. Aren't we allowed 500,000 characters per month per user account? I contacted Support and the rep emailed me saying I used 720,000 characters and indeed over the limit, and that was it. That is year to data amount, not this month. Does that mean it will not reset next month or until the end of subscription?? What happened to 500,000 characters a mont? I've been seeking for information for two days now and haven't gotten any help so far.

  • Hello ,

I have checked back with support on this for you for clarification.

On the subscription model that you have, there is a 7.2 MILLION characters limit, per calendar year, which you are able use, as you require.

As the Machine Translation usage appears quite high, I am wondering whether you are saving the translations (after editing) to your TM and reusing these?

  • As it turned out it was 7.2 mil I used so far, in 6 months. I reached the free allowed limit and it won't reset until the 1-year term reaches. I save my translations to my TMs and reuse them. Anyway, I contacted the sales and they quote me $600 for 10mil a year. That's seems to be a steep price for getting additional 2.8 mil. I will have to get by without NMT. I just didn't know I was translating that much. Thank you for your post. I wish SDL makes things a little easier. I had to log in three different SDL websites while sorting this out...

It's probably an additional 4 million as the quoted allowance is 6 million but we're generous to allow for some excessive use.  So only $0.00015 per word for the additional.  I don't know how you use your NMT but perhaps you can prepare your projects in a way that doesn't use it so heavily?  Being generous 40k words a day on average is a fair bit more than a freelancer would use and the freemium model is aimed at supporting the freelancer who doesn't generally make a living from machine translation... it's more of an aid to their translation process..

What language pairs are you translating?  Perhaps there's a viable alternative for you as we do support more NMT providers than any other translation tool provider.

Which ones did you go to?  If you came here first, which is the right place, you'd have got your answer in one go ;-)
