MyMemory Pro

I have been happily using MyMemory Pro for the last 3+ years and as a result I never bothered to download/install and/or use any other NMT. The Translated support team in ROME were helpful, for instance when I could not upload a TM through their standard process because it was too heavy.

Happily except for an issue which might be a bug (of MyMemory? of Studio?). Every time you open a project (a new one, an ongoing one, whatever), if the first segment you happen to confirm had its translation suggested not by MyMemory, but by some TM, Studio freezes and you must shut it down using Windows Task Manager. The workaround (never to be forgotten!) is, every time you open your project, to go to the project settings and to deactivate MyMemory until it is actually needed (no TM proposal).

I had a lengthy exchange with the Translated support team during most of 2019, with absolutely no positive result;  you SDL people know the sentence: "We cannot reproduce your problem!". If I am not the only one to be confronted with this issue, if at least a few other Studio+MyMemory users too were faced with the same problem, then it might be worth digging into it (with the help of the Translated team) and trying to get it fixed (I had this issue with 2017 and 2019 and I still have it with 2021 too).

  • Just out of curiosity, as I don't know of this problem, what happens if you disable lookahead?

    First, thank you for getting interested in a problem which does not seem to bother any other fellow translator: could it be exclusive to my software/hardware?

    AFAIK, Lookahead can originate multifarious problems, so it has long been disabled in my successive Studios.

  • I think the only way you'll get to the bottom of this is if the plugin developer builds some logging into the plugin to try and track down where the issue comes from.  We try to do this with all the plugins we maintain an regularly enhance the logging in various plugins when users report problems that we cannot reproduce.

    I tested it myself a short while ago after the developer kindly reminded me of my licence key ;-)  I also cannot reproduce this problem.  I can get TM results in the first segment with MyMemory activated and it all works fine without delays or freezing.

    Maybe a place to check is your internet connection... are you using a VPN perhaps that might be restricting some traffic?  Does your security software check a little too aggressively... maybe disable it temporarily and see what happens?

    I'm not really sure what to suggest I'm afraid, but it does "unfortunately" seem to be specific to you.

    Even if currently I am not not overloaded with work and would have idle time for some experiments, I think that as long as I am the only one facing this issue and complaining I will go on living/working with my workaround.

    BTW, I would have ingenuously thought that too active a security suite would be agressive in the first place against MyMemory (landing through Internet) before creating problems with TMs acting from an internal SSD. And why an issue when confirming for the first time(s) at the beginning of the Studio working session and later everything working fine?

    More details:

    • When I say "first segment", I do not mean segment #1 in the file, but the segment (any rank in the file) you start working in right after opening the file.
    • And the problem does not appear when "getting TM results in the first segment", but when confirming this "first segment", after editing or not the TM proposal (Another workaround might be not confirming any of these "first segments" until MyMemory is put to work in a no match segment, confirm the translation of this no match and only then go back to those translated, not confirmed segments and confirm them: not very practical!).

    And I do not use any VPN.
