"No open TM" after starting work on a package

Hi all

I'm having a problem with working on a package: Studio says that there is no open translation memory.

I worked previously on the same project starting from a previous package and everything went fine. Now I received a new package adding a new translatable to the same project, and the TM is suddenly not available. I located the appropriate directory for the TM (not the one where TMs are kept by default, but a project directory) and found two TMs. I opened both from the Translation Memories tab, and now they appear in the list of TMs, but the message still is that there is no open TM.

What to do?

I would appreciate all help: my problem is fairly urgent as I promised to deliver the translation by Monday.

  • In which menu did you go to add the TMs to your current project?

If you did that via Tools - Options, no results will be seen, as Tools - Options - Language Pairs do never affect an already created project.

Please make sure you did this via Project - Project settings.

Please also take a little time to read my tea allegory to better understand the correlations between various settings in Studio: multifarious.filkin.com/.../tea-and-settings

  • Thank you for the information!

I did not not know how to activate a TM before (except in the case of creating a project myself), as it was not necessary in the case of my previous package. I wonder why the two packages were different.

I have one more question: I have now two TM's enabled and to be updated, is that actually possible in Studio? I thought that only one TM (the primary one) can be updated at any given time.

    Regards,

    Suvi

  • You CAN update as many TMs at the time, as you wish, but you SHOULD update just one during your work.

Otherwise you will be getting same matches from several TMs then, causing a multiple 100% match situation, which by default applies a penalty of 1% to the hit. This makes your work unnecessary slower. So the recommendation or best practice is always to chose one TM to be the so called "main TM", put it in the first place in the list and let this one be updated during your work. When your project is finished, use a batch task to upgrade any TM you wish - just change the project settings then. Or use the final translated SDLXLIFF file to import into any TM you wish. This is really the best practice.
