Multiterm

I just purchased Studio 2021. I thought I had mastered creating a termbase and importing a termbase. I have not. The second termbase I attempted did not work.

I am trying to import old termbases (which I received from SDL in trados packages), and I believe I have the correct files (the xdt file for creating the termbase, and the xml for importing). But I couldn't repeat the process. What does the tree in the definition mean. I am still unclear about what to add (if anything) to the tree. Do I add the two languages in both the language fields and the descriptive fields. What does Identity mean in the tree?

I managed to enter one termbase in multiterm, but when I reopened it, I suddenly got a message asking me to prove I had the right to use the termbase. What does that mean? It was a termbase I received from SDL, and now I have to prove I can use it?

I would appreciate any help you can give. I have been a longtime MemoQ user and have never had any problems. The program is user friendly and I never had to define any tree?

Can anyone help? Thank you.

memoQ has an unsophisticated glossary solution and doesn't offer the flexibility to define your own definition.  So it doesn't need you to define your tree.  But having said that, it is enough for most translators and MultiTerm is more complicated!

Probably the easiest way for most users to work with termbases is to use the Glossary Converter from the appstore.  If you do this it will take out the complexity to some extent and reduce the effort to simply dragging and dropping.  So if you work with termbases a lot I'd recommend you take a look at that tool:

Because MultiTerm offers this flexibility it's easy to find yourself trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.  So, if the definition of the termbase you are importing into is not the same as the definition of the XML file you are attempting to import then it won't work.  This article might help a little:

I'm not sure what you mean here, but a screen shot might be helpful (you can copy/paste images into here).

  • Thanks for you assistance. To solve the rights message, I closed the program and then reopened and had no problem. Maybe just a glitch. Something you said clicked and I checked and realized I could export a termbase in MemoQ into Studio by exporting it as an xml file, and that seems to have solved my problem. Thanks again.
