Can Glossary Converter do what MultiTerm does?

I have been working as a translator for a couple of years, but I am still a beginner with Trados.

For a bigger project, I will start using a termbase management tool.

I found both MultiTerm and Glossary Converter.

I have two questions while studying both programs.

  1. I could download Glossary Converter. By the way, it looks like MultiTerm 2021 is for sale at $300. Is it a program I need to purchase to use it? I thought it is free as many people talked about it.
  2. I read the descriptions of both MultiTerm and Glossary Converter. It looks like they have similar functions. If MultiTerm is not free, can I go with Glossary Converter and still enjoy the benefits that MultiTerm provides?

Thank you.

If you purchase Trados Studio then MultiTerm is provided as part of that purchase.  If you only wish to use MultiTerm and not Trados Studio then there is a fee for MultiTerm. It is not free.

I read the descriptions of both MultiTerm and Glossary Converter. It looks like they have similar functions.

The Glossary Converter is a third party product developed using the MultiTerm API.  It does not do the same thing.  The converter is a tool for converting one file format to another.  MultiTerm is a tool for managing Terminology.  Completely different.

I suggest you read this to understand better what the Glossary Converter is for:

Since that article, which is six years old, there has been even more fil formats made possible for conversion and more features around the manipulation of data in the files.  But it is not a tool for managing your terminology.
