Not able to create new terms (The object reference is not set to an object instance)

Hi there,

I have for several months not been able to create new terms in Multiterm (neither Insert New Term or Quick Insert New Term). There is no notifications for updating of Studio or Multiterm. Any tips for what I can check would be appreciated. This is the first time I have this problem using Trados since back in the days.

    Hi 

    The first thing to try is to check whether both Studio and MultiTerm are BOTH up to date.

    Once upon a time it didn't matter if they weren't but now MultiTerm has to be the correct version for the version of Studio that you are running.

    So, first open Studio, go to the Help tab and click 'Check for Updates' 

    If you need to update, a notification will appear to the right of your Studio screen. Download then install any update.

    Next, repeat the same for MultiTerm - you need to open MultiTerm itself.

    Once you have updated both Studio and MultiTerm, see if you can now create new terms.

    If not, open the termbase (.sdltb) in MultiTerm and try reorganising the termbase via Termbase Management (bottom left) then Reorganise (Home tab > Reorganize) and click through the options that appear.

    If your new term functionality is still not working, try running a Windows Repair first on MultiTerm Core and Desktop, then on Studio.

    This will repair links between the two pieces of software by checking for and replacing anything that is missing from their setup, for example.

    Here is how:

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features
      • - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2021 etc) and click 'Uninstall/Change' either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu (or just 'Repair' for MultiTerm), then select > Yes > Repair. Allow it to run. This will take longer for Studio than for the 3 main components of MultiTerm. Do NOT repair 'Remove suite of products' entries. These are only for uninstalling.
    4. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.

    If none of the above solves your problem, you may need to have an SDL support person connect remotely to your computer to see what is wrong.

    Hi Alison! Thank you very much for your help and sorry for getting back to you so late. There where never a mail in my inbox about it as in the pre-RWS days, so I just imagined things had changed. You tip about repair of both programs helped!
