I am planning a termbase in MultiTerm (Desktop) that would contain numerous terms in two languages with supporting images, PDF documents etc. Is anything known about a maximum size for termbases, will it get unstable at some point?

In theory the Database spec. that Kelly referred to is what you need since a MultiTerm desktop database is just an access database (I edited the link and replaced with a tinyurl. MS links contain strings that look like an activation code and the forum redacts them!)
You might be better considering Trados Terminology or maybe Trados Team?

The file size limit is 2 GB. It all depends on the nature of your data, term length. fields, media files... but for a bilingual termbase without media files, MultiTerm can handle something in the ballpark of 200,000 terms per language, in my experience.
