Can't delete a descriptive field

Hi all,

While experimenting with the definition of a termbase I have already created and filled with entries, I created a descriptive field and then added it under the Term Level. I finished the wizard and reloaded the termbase as required by the program. However, now I cannot remove the descriptive field and get the following message when a try to do so:

"The termbase you have specified is not empty and cannot be modified in this way."

I would be grateful if someone can help me with this issue.

I am using SDL MultiTerm 2019 - 15.0.6.56482

Error message in Trados Studio's Termbase Wizard stating 'The termbase you have specified is not empty and cannot be modified in this way.' with an OK button.

  • Hi

I often think of terminology database like a spiders web or a dream catcher.
The minute you wish to adapt where you are removing strings, often you will find it cant be done.
99% of the time it would be due to tight dependencies the existing term entries have.

I say this as the message you are getting implies that and I am sensitive to you saying

I have already created and filled with entries

I am sure you can appreciate when weaving a spiders web or dream catcher there is a pattern that strengthens the structure.
You can add but to remove parts after you have started is a no no.

My advice would be to use Glossary Converter: https://appstore.rws.com/Plugin/195
It puts all the terms and entries into an excel. You can then also re-evaluate your database structure and all your required fields.

That said looking at your screen print, even if you have no tight dependencies for the existing term entries against Dynamics yet, this is not the view were you could try remove it from your termbase definition/structure.

    It would be here

Screenshot of Trados Studio Termbase Manager showing the Termbase Wizard - Step 4 of 5 with options to create descriptive fields for termbase entries.

I hope this helps a bit

  • Hi Lydia,

    Thank you for your reply.

I must stress the fact that I have not added any entry after creating the descriptive field, and it still cannot be removed. Also, the Remove button on Step 4 of the wizard is grayed out, and hence the descriptive field cannot be removed from there either. In the meantime, I created another descriptive in the same location, unfortunately with the same fate. It seems once you reload the termbase after adding a descriptive field, it will be stuck there even if you do not add any entry afterward.

However, thank you for suggesting the Glossary Converter. Is there a manual of some sort for this plugin?
