whenever I get that error message it usually means that my laptop is connected to the internet via mobile data. If you are working with mobile data on, try switching to Wi-Fi/Ethernet.
For some reason, Multiterm does not like mobile data, nor does it like VPNs.
It works fine with Wi-FI or Ethernet, though.
