TB updates

To clarify my question/suggestion, I am NOT referring to one-to-many term entries, but rather to one-to-one term entries stored in the TB in the following way:

  • good (EN) : gut| (DE)

  • all (EN) : all| (DE)

My question was whether, by storing the term only once in this form, Trados can recognize the same German word across its various inflected forms without having to register each form separately.

For example, would the TB recognize the following as the same term without individual entries?

  • gut → guter, gute, gutes, gutem, guten

  • all → aller, alle, alles, allem, allen

In German translation, not only adjectives and verb forms but also indefinitas and noun singular/plural forms and case inflections (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative) result in many surface variants of the same lemma.
If the CAT tool cannot recognize these as the same term, we would need to register the same word 6–7 times in the TB, which would significantly increase workload and also cause considerable inconvenience during QA.

That is why I wanted to ask whether Trados provides a function to handle this kind of inflectional variation automatically.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

  • Hi  ,

As a German native speaker translating into English, I can confirm that Trados is able to find the inflected forms of words without problems. Under Project Settings > Search Settings, you can set a minimum match value (default: 70%), i.e. Trados does find fuzzy matches for terms. So there is no need to enter all the various forms. What we do, though, is to enter plurals that deviate from the singular form, such as Antrag / Anträge, but this is mainly for practical reasons (less editing of the recognized term :-)

    Hope that helps!

    Best regards
