This is not possible.  They are tags and will only be displayed as tags.  It might be possible to hide them in the editor on the basis they get treated as formatting, but that's not really helpful as you obviously need to be able to see them.

So I don't think you can achieve what I suggested unless you pre-process the XML to switch the br tag with a line break.  Then after translation reverse the process.  Probably not worth the effort and risk of messing something up.
