How to process a bi-lingual XML file?

Hello community,

I have been given a bi-lingual XML file for revision. The basic structure is like this:

<string language="de">German text</string>

<string language="en">English text</string>

I would like to edit the file in Studio 2016 so that I can update my TM after the final revision. I know how to extract strings in one language (e.g. only the "en" attribute), but how can I "tell" Studio that German (de) is the source language whereas English (en) is the target?

I assume I will have to define a new file type and parsing rules, but I have not be been able to figure out exactly how to do it.

Any pointers will be appreciated!

    Hi Bettina,

    There is no bilingual xml capability in Studio. So your options are either to verify this isn't eally xliff disguised as xml in which case you may be able to use the xliff filetype with a small adjustment; or you need to copy the source text into the target segments in the xml file before you start and then translate the file as xml.

    Hi Paul,

    Thanks for the quick reply. I am positive that the file is not a xliff in disguise. The file was created by a software engineer as an XML file.

    While the link you posted contains quite some helpful hints for other issues I have encountered in the past, I am not sure how it may help me with this particular file. I apologise if my initial request was not clear. The file I am dealing with contains roughly 1,000 strings in both German and English which need to be revised.

    <string language="de">Bildschirm</string>

    <string language="en">Display</string>


    For the sake of consistency, I would like to edit the file in Studio and create a TM from it.

    The only solution I can think of at the moment is to extract the German strings to one file and the English strings to another file and then to perform an aligment, but I am still hoping for a less cumbersome solution.
