How to translate a source word doc with markups AND have them exactly the same way in target?

Hi everybody,

I'm not quite sure whether this has been discussed previously – didn't find any relevant posts, although I thought there were.

Quite often, I receive word docs containing a markup (tracked changes, I'm not too familiar with the terminology in English, I'm afraid) from my clients. my job is to translate them exactly as they are, that is including deleted text and new text marked, both marked as such.

Why? Really easy to answer: they are draft contracts and of course also the other party would like to see where the document has changed and in what respect. Easy to understand, but obviously impossible to implement in SDL.

Currently I tackle this kind of scenario as follows:

  1. save one document as the previous text as a word doc
  2. save one document as the new text as a word doc
  3. translate number one in SDL
  4. translate number two in SDL
  5. compare the two files in Word and save the resulting text as target.

Any advice? Any further improvements? Of course, I would love to see such feature being included in a future version of SDL.

Thanks a lot, Carola
