TARGET FILE(WORD) IS NOT AS IT WAS EXPECTED TO BE

I COMPLETED MY TRANSLATION TO A FILE WITHOUT HAVING REMOVING ANY TAGS BUT DELIVERING THEM IN THE TRANSLATION.

HOWEVER, WHEN I SAVED THE TARGET FILE THE IMAGE OF THE MAGAZINE (THE FILE WAS FROM A MAGAZINE) IS NOT CORRECT

IMAGES ARE MISSING, THE WORDS DON'T FIT IN THE BOXES, SOME WORDS ARE MISSING AND OTHER SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

I CAN CORRECT SOME WORDS BUT I CAN'T BRING THE IMAGES BACK

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHAT WENT WRONG ( I JUST COPY THE ORIGINAL PHRASES IN THE TRANSLATION WINDOW AND THEN EDIT THEM IN ORDER TO DELIVER THE TAGS - IS THERE THE MISTAKE?)

  • First of all, please try to use lower case letters too, it makes it much easier to read your text.
You seem to have started with a PDF file, didn't you?
In such case the best advice would have been to convert the text prior to translating in Studio, correct the layout and then start. I'm afraid there is no single program in the world being able to convert a PDF with pictures so, that no work is required in terms of formatting the resulting file.
But even if the source wasn't a PDF, it is unfortunately quite naive to expect, that such a major change as a language of the file will not influence the formatting. In any case a tidying up of the final file formatting is necessary. Sometimes it is just a look on the file and it fits, but unfortunately in most cases quite an effort is necessary to reformat it. This is NOT a problem or a malfunction of Studio.

  • Do you mean that it is a problem of the agency not to correct the layout when converted the file and my business is just to fix what can be fixed except images that are missing etc.
  • TBH it always depends. What kind of document did you get? What was your task? Translation of a magazine in PDF? Did you offer translation or translation and delivery of a finally formatted file?
If we get a Word file for translation, so we deliver a Word file. Usually I do not even touch the formatting. When the customer requests a formatted Word file, I may do that for an extra charge. But usually we just deliver the Word file (InDesign, whatever) after a translation, DTP is not done here without an explicit order to do that.
But if the file you've got did contain images and your final file does not, so I would at least check, where the images are. Most probably they are off pages, as the layout has massively changed. All this sounds like a really crappy PDF conversion - so the source of the problems is to be searched in that conversion. If that was done by the agency, you are not liable for anything here, as your task was (most probably) to translate. But if the conversion is your work, so the agency will expect you to deliver what was agreed - maybe even a file with pictures. Only you know what was agreed.

  • The agency converted the file for me in order to translate but it also expects me to deliver a proper target file. I see what i can do in communication with them but thank you very much, you've been very helpful.
  • Well, then the file hasn't been converted properly. You can check that quite easily - open the converted source file and copy text somewhere, then move the cursor to the end of the sentence and paste the copied text. When the layout is ok, the text will just be a page longer. But if not, the layout will be messed up. Same happens after translation.
PDF files are tricky and agency conversions usually useless. This is why I never use Studio (or any other automated converter) to convert PDF for me, but instead:
    1. Try to save Word from Acrobat. If that works and the file looks fine, all is OK.
    2. If that did not work, I use either InFix PDF Editor by Iceni or Abby Fine Reader with MANUAL conversion.

I'm afraid there are no real alternatives to that. In any case: when the source was PDF, check the resulting converted file PRIOR to translation and do not accept crappy layout for translation. Otherwise it will always end in a disaster.
