Most probably the interop assemblies hasn't been installed or do not work properly.
You must also make sure, that one of the Office installations is the default one for double click. 2003 and 2007 work together, but sometimes "forget" who was the boss.
Here is the interop assembly for Office 2003 support.microsoft.com/.../EN-US
And here for Office 2007 www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx
Download and install both, 2003 first, then 2007.

Thanks for that. Hasn't worked yet, maybe I need to reboot. Btw the issue is with MS Excel, MS Word works fine.
I'll try again tomorrow.
I've now tried everything. But my Studio 2011 will not translate Excel files. I even upgraded to Office 2013 but that hasn't helped, it says Invalid file format. Sick of it!
There is something wrong with your installation then - as Studio 2011 does not refuse to translate any kind of Excel files. Unfortunately I cannot tell, what is wrong. Maybe you could try a repair installation of Studio?
BTW, which operating system? Mac on Parallels? A virtual machine maybe?
Did you install all software as admin?
There can be several reasons for a bad installation and unfortunately I am not able to se what is wrong with your PC.
