Issue with TM update

Hello everybody,

I have an issue with the updating of a Translation Memory. The fact is: the client gives me a reference TM, in which I never save my translations. This reference TM is for research/consultation purpose only. Every month, the client checks the translations I have done for him (and maybe adds corrections to them) and then sends me an update file (.tmx). Every month, I have to upload this update file in the reference TM to enrich it.

I noticed last month that some units were missing in my TM, but were present in the client's one. I did the monthly update upload yesterday, and here is what I noticed. Here is the problem:

Before I did the upload, the reference TM had 519 043 units.
- I wanted to know the number of units of the update file, so I converted it into a TM. In the parameters, I could see that the update TM had 24 341 units (only NEW ones).

Then, I uploaded the original update file (.tmx) in my reference TM; no filters, no exclusions.
- The box stated: "Read and uploaded units" : 24 362 / No errors.
--> Here, first question, I don't understand why the number is different! Why don't I have 24 341???

So, after the uploading, my reference TM should have either 519 043 + 24 341 = 543 384 or 2 519 043 + 24 362 = 543 405 units.
I checked the parameters. It has 542 323...

I don't understand!... So in fact, some units must be missing in my TM...

Does somebody have an explanation? Maybe I did something wrong? I would be very grateful for some help!

Thanks a lot in advance,

  • Hi Aurélie,

If only life was that straightforward ;-)  I think the difference could be related to how you updated your TMX file... but it's hard to know really.  When you update a TM you have various options you possibly never pay attention to:

These options can increase or decrease the number of TUs that wind up in your TM depending on the specific content.  So it may be that when you upgraded the TMX to an SDLTM you created something that contained more TUs.

It can be very hard to identify these, especially with large numbers like these and generally I don't think it's worth worrying about it too much.  I think when you import your TMX you probably get what you need.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hello Paul,

Thank you very much for your answer. The problem is: I actually don't get what I need, that's the point! I know for sure that for some reason, some units aren't uploaded in my TM and that's what causing my trouble...

I sent screenshots of the parameters to the client and he told me everything should be okay, that he uses the same...
