Plug-in for Studio to process InCopy files

Is there a plug-in for translating files directly in InCopy using Studio 2015, so without having to export the files to another format first and then saving them locally?

Thanks for your help.

Virtual merge was a suggestion for opening more files in one go for translation.  You said this... or rather Glen did but you said you had the same problem:

In trying to find an alternative, they have sent .icml files which I know Trados can handle, BUT it seems InCopy has created a separate file for every little text box, snippet, etc. Have you heard of any way to merge these so they are a manageable number?

    Have I misunderstood you?

What I need to do is to update files in the InCopy system (with my translation in Studio) without having to import/export files (idml) or to layout again in InDesign (designers are actally copy-pasting the idml in their layout). Any solution to automate this?

I'm a bit confused by this. If you’ve translated InCopy files, why can’t you simply return the translated .icml files?

My understanding is that designers should place .icml files into the InDesign layout as linked stories - which is the standard InCopy workflow.  Then, when you return the translated .icml with the structure and formatting preserved, InDesign should automatically update the content without any need for manual copy-pasting or layout adjustments.

If they’re currently copying and pasting, it sounds like they may need to rethink their process, as it seems unnecessary and is leading you to look for awkward workarounds.

  • Dear Paul,

It's all clear now. So far, I've been using idml files with InCopy but apparently icml is the solution. I'll try that with my designers.

    Thanks a million!
