Update TMs appears stuck -- using no resources

"Update main translation memories" hangs for minutes before finishing -- and the Resource Monitor shows essentially no resource usage for the Studio process.

If I then re-open the files and update the main TMs again, there is no long wait.

What is Studio doing if there is no resource usage during the first update? Is it locking itself out somehow when trying to update segments in the TM and then waiting until a time-out?

These are not big files.

  • Hi Bruce,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you- only just seen your question.

What is the size of the 'main translation memories'?
as very large TM's can of course slow down the update but this normally would be reflected in the resource usage.
I suspect however this has something to do with an outdated Windows or the AV (AntiVirus) definitions.
Please close ALL running programs then temporarily close down your AntiVirus program.
    Run a Windows full update
Then restart Studio and try the TM update again-(without starting the AV)- if there is improved performance then Studio will need to be added to the AV exceptions.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue.

  • Thank you for your help Steve,

The TMs are not very large. I think there were 2 TMs, one small and the other no more than 50,000 segments.

I also thought about antivirus. But I thought about it years ago :-)

I am currently running Windows 10 and have excluded the "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL" and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL" directories in Windows Defender. I am assuming this is enough and I don't have to exclude the SDL process itself. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Windows 10 is fully up to date, as is Studio.

I was also puzzled by the lack of resource usage.

There was no delay if I ran the update TM batch command a second time when there were no longer any segments to update, which made me think that reading the TM was not a problem, just updating. And that made me think that if Studio was waiting on something it might be waiting for write access to the TM.

But this is just wild speculation ...

I thought I would mention it in case it was related to recent changes made to Studio.

    Best regards,
    Bruce
