Also we have a free app in the app store (http://appstore.sdl.com/app/studio-migration-utility/481/) that helps migrate all your files etc from earlier versions to Studio 2017, you will need however to read the notes as this works only on Windows 7 or higher OS running .Net 4.5.2

The TMs are fundamentally the same,  but there are some changes.

1. Between the 2014 and 2015 versions improvements were made to the segmentation logic, improved placeable recognition and also wordcount logic and a few options were added to control what counted as a word under certain circumstances.  There's a little info on this here:

2. There was also a  need to reindex the TMs to make sure these changes were used correctly in your TM.  You can do this in the same view as you do the fragment matching mentioned below.
   
   
3. In 2017 we have a new feature called Fragment Matching.  This requires updating your TMs to be able to take advantage of this.  More in this here:

Once you have made these changes you can still use the TM in 2011, but obviously any work you do in the older version won't add to the new features in 2017 so you'd have to occasionally do a little maintenance until you stopped using 2011 altogether.
