Keyboard shortcuts not working

SDL Trados Studio 2017 - for some unknown reason almost all my keyboard shortcuts (default) have stopped working. Has anyone encountered the same problem and know of a solution?

  • When you upgrade, one of the steps is to select your profile. Some people intuitively select 'SDL Trados' (which actually means 'old' Trados, not Studio). Because you do not select your profile every time you create a project (well you do have this field, but it never needs any change so that you hardly notice it), you can easily forget about the choice you've once done. The same reason is why you cannot reset it to default: your shortcuts are already those by default for _this_ profile (SDL Trados = 'old' Trados). All you need is selecting 'Default' profile. If you have other preferences, you can save ['Export user settings' option] your profile having assumed it any other name of your choice (other than Default, SDLX, SDL Trados). In case if the Universe collapses, go to Setup->Manage User Profiles again and select 'Change user profile', then locate what you saved.

  • Profiles have to consist of settings. Why are we working on such a global level, changing profiles to get at one little setting - instead of looking for the actual setting(s) that is/are the problem - presuming we're happy with how the program is functioning otherwise?

It is an interesting point, though - I might have made that profile selection mistake. I'd have had no idea - which isn't good, of course. It looks more "on target" than the alternatives. But... what does the profile really include? Are you saying that the old Trados profile disabled the standard windows-wide alt-z command?
  • A profile consists your screen layout and your shortcuts - these things are for sure stored there. Also editor settings are in there.
The project templates are integrated in the Projects.xml file

It is worth nothing to say, that exporting your user profile and resetting it to a default one could be a solution in that very case. CTRL+Z is a standard, not modified shortcut, present in any preset profile (as far as I know that). And I have no idea why this very one should not be working in a particular project. Is this a project you created on your own? If so, create it anew, using the target SDLXLIFF file from the current one. Should this be a customer package, ask the customer, if they have provided you with some very special setup - I don't think it is possible, but one never knows. But you also can remove this very project from your project list, then receive the package again and replace the resources and translatable files with the files you have currently been editing.

  • Jerzy, that makes sense - I'll try it!

I also note that a profile, then, would contain a host of settings and customizations, everything a user makes over years of work. Unless you're the kind of user who tends to work with standard (default) settings, changing little or nothing, or unless you took the time to make a list of all your settings and customizations, that's anything but a trivial sacrifice for this fix, right? Does it include options settings in the program, too?
  • The profile has inside:

    • Editor settings (like font adaptation, colors and so on - look in File -> Options -> Editor)
    • Keyboard shortcuts
    • Window settings (like termbase viewer on another screen)

This is what I can confirm from my usage.

  • You know what would be great in programs like these? In Word and Photoshop, too? A simple file where all settings that differ from the default settings would automatically get added to a list accessible via the program. That would be really smart.
