Performance boost without hyperthreading

Will reducing the number of threads on a quad core CPU speed up Studio performance? I decided to find out by turning off hyperthreading in my BIOS.

Now, even though my 4-core CPU is only operating with 4 threads, Studio appears to be running faster. As a bonus, Dragon DPI 15 also appears to be performing better.

When I monitor the processes for these two programs in the Task Manager, I now see their CPU usage rise to around 25% or higher, while before their CPU usage used to max out at around 13%.

Even if Studio and Dragon fully use one CPU core each, my quad core i7 7700K CPU should still be powerful enough to manage all of the other processes on the remaining 2 cores.

I thought I would mention this in this forum in case anyone else wanted to try it out. I would be interested in hearing whether you experience a speed-up or slow-down in performance, or any comments you might have.

Hi David,

No, I have not benchmarked anything.

Studio just feels faster. And when I saw the cpu utilisation if 25% or more (up from around 13%), it seemed that my hunch had been verified.

Both Studio and Nuance DPI15 (voice to text) appear to be more responsive.

No other program appears to have been negatively affected, which is probably because my i7 cpu has plenty of processing power to spare. (I just left hyperthreading turned off and have not noticed any negative effects.)

I wonder how an i3 would perform without hyperthreading if Studio hogged one of the two cores ...

To summarise what I have been doing so far:

With hyperthreading turned off, the Task Manager currently shows Studio using around 25% or more of my CPU when doing a large analysis.

Dragon (Nuance DPI15) uses around 35% or more when I dictate a long sentence.

If I exclude both Studio and Dragon (natspeak.exe) as *processes* in Windows Defender (see the discussion in the following Community discussion: community.sdl.com/.../10892) and turn off the SDL Telemetrics service, Studio and Dragon are the only processes that use a significant share of my CPU.

As a result, if I do an analysis in Studio and dictate a long sentence in Dragon at the same time, my CPU utilisation rises to around 60% to 70%.

Hi Bruce,

After four years, are you still running Studio and DNS with hyperthreading turned off?

If that's the case, can you summarise your experience so far?

My computer, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K, 16.0 GB RAM and 445GB is fine tuned and runs quite fast but, like everyone else, I experience some bottlenecks with Studio and I have found this thread in my search of workarounds.

From the benchmarks reviews I have seen (like these one)

cpu.userbenchmark.com/.../4071vs2384

there is no current high-end cpu that could improve the individual performance per core of my current processor by more than 20-30%, so I'm not sure that changing my cpu, i.e. computer, will really solve my problem.

Hi Pablo Dittrich,

No, I am no longer running with hyperthreading turned off.

Although the numbers initially appeared to indicate a benefit, in practice I did not feel that Studio was any faster.

We probably have to wait until Studio is a 64-bit process (with multiple threads) before we see any increase in speed :-(
