Studio 2017 - how to format target text by inserting additional tags

It happened on several occasions that formatting tags in the target segment does not necessarily to be identical to those in the source. For example the font size in the source is 11, but it should be 14 in the target. Other examples include paragraph spacing and line break. I learn from a post that there is a possibility to  insert tags to the target that are not in the source. How do I do it?

Can TM store these tags in the target so that they can be retrieved when I translate the updated source?

  • Hi Jessica,

Some formatting tags can be add by using the Quick Insert toolbar:

However, font size is not one of them. The only way to do this, and I have not tested this thoroughly, is to add a line in your source file that contains the different font formatting you wish to see in the target. Just add it to the start of the file, or the end for example. Now you can use these formatting tags from the source anywhere you like in the target.

However given the types of changes you also mention around paragraph spacing and line breaks I think you would be much better off separating the translation work and DTP work completely. So translate the file, save target and then spend some time in DTP as a chargeable exercise afterwards. Alternatively ask the client to format the source the way they would like to see the target, and then you can handle it all during the translation process.

    Regards
