"Alt" keyboard shortcuts do not work properly suddenly

Hello,
since a couple of days my "Alt" keyboard shortcuts do not work properly anymore. With most of the shortcuts, either the ribbon opens or nothing happens. For example, for "Confirm and Translate to Next Fuzzy Match", I have defined the key "Alt + F" and used it for a long time. Now, when I press "Alt+F", the menu "File" opens. I find that really annoying. Has something been changed in studio again? Because I have noticed this behavior in the past with new versions of Studio too.
Thank you, if you could suggest a good solution. Because the Alt-Hotkeys are the most ergonomic (much better than finger breaking "Shift-Ctrl" or others), but with the ribbon toolbar most of them got lost. Is it possible, to "switch off" the ribbon shortcuts? Because most of them are not real shortcuts anyway. For example, Alt+H+S1 or Alt+H+Z32 is in my opinion definitely not an abbreviation.
Thank you
Adrian

  • Hi,

Happens for me to, and I think Microsoft is the original perpetrator, who came up with the ribbon design in the first place. A real productivity killer in my opinion. Different sizes of icons, some with text labels underneath the command, some with text labels next to the command, some without any text labels at all, you have to hover with the mouse to see the shortcuts etc., etc., etc... I am quite confident that the brain reads a uniformly formatted list from top to bottom (i.e. a menu) a lot quicker than a ribbon, for which you have to move your eyes up and and down and sideways, and try to connect the dots between icons and text labels... I hope SDL would have the courage to re-introduce the menu design :)

Anyway, you could try to add the commands to the toolbar, then you will have Alt + <number> keyboard shortcuts for those commands. But the toolbar has traditionally worked so-so in Studio. Haven't really experimented with it too much in 2017, so it might be better now.

Autohotkey is also quite handy customise shortcuts, but I am not sure if it will override the letters reserved for the ribbon. I think it might do.

  • Hi,
you are absolutely right, the ribbon is a step back. Especially with 16:9 screens I do not see the benefit in having a large part of the available screen space occupied by the ribbon...
I tried to overwrite the ribbon hotkeys with AHK, but it does not work anymore. The studio ribbon is somehow "obstinate" nowadays...
  • Hi Adrian,

In case you don't know... in Studio, you can set the Ribbon to disappear when you don't need it (as in Word) via a little '^' up arrow at the right end of the ribbon. That's what I do when working in Studio on my teensy netbook - I open the ribbon by hovering my cursor over the top of the window.

However, I haven't experienced your issues because I don't use the Alt keys at all, couldn't get on with them because I already knew the Ctrl+ combos off by heart (and discovered there were more than I knew) along with the F1, F2 etc buttons and the right click dropdown hotkeys. Maybe because I learned to avoid anything that can be overruled by Windows updates ;-))

TBH, I absolutely hated the ribbon to begin with in Microsoft Office but I made myself get used to it because I saw it was coming in Studio and realised I'd have to or I'd be swimming upstream. Now, I actually like it because I find it faster than what went before.

We're all different so I thought I ought to add my 5 cents' worth as a little pro-Ribbon voice, and it's Sunday and I've had time to read posts today!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and have a good week!

    Ali :))
