Formatting disabled when opening xliff file in project

Hi
When I open a new project and add xliff-files, the formatting (bold, italic a.o.) is disabled in the editor. If I double click on a same file to open it directly in Studio, formatting is activated. What can I do, that formatting is available within a project? Just upgraded from 2014 to 2017 > same problem.
Thanks M

  • Hello Markus,

If these features are deactivated it's most likely because they are not supported in the XLIFF. So you can only use formatting that is already in the source. If you tried to put formatting in the application using the XLIFF files it probably wouldn't know what to do with the formatting.

  • But why is formatting enabled, when I open the same xliff-file not by adding it to a project but by opening it directly with Studio?

  • No idea! Can I see your XLIFF file? I tested on a couple of files I had and I don't have these options so would be good to see your file. You can email it to pfilkin@sdl.com if this is ok?

  • Hi Markus,

ok - you mean sdlxliff not xliff. There is a difference. An xliff file becomes an xliff.sdlxliff file, and htm file becomes an htm.sdlxliff file etc. So in your example the underlying format is actually htm not xliff. Despite all this I always get the quick formatting options available to me in all three of these cases with your file:

    1. Open the sdlxliff as a single file
    2. Create a project with your sdlxliff as source
    3. Save the htm and then work with the htm as source

The only time I don't see these options is if I don't activate a segment first.

Maybe also worth noting that with this format surely it's better to work with the tags and not the formatting controls? Normally these are only there to introduce formatting when it's not already in the source. When it's in the source you just transfer the tags from the source to the target.

    Regards
