How to produce bilingual documents?

Question

Is there a way to generate a translation that contains both the source and translation? Say I have a Japanese document, and I translate into English, I'd like to produce something that has both the Japanese and English in it on the same line or on separate lines. Producing the English file then manually adding hundreds of English segments to the original document is time-consuming. The documents in question are complex word and powerpoint documents with tables and text boxes. Sizing issues would be fixed during DTP.

The only way to do this would be to translate the file and then when you're done go back over the segments, copy source to target and then add the translation from the TM after the source ended. 
 
But this would lead to many difficulties in DTP as you'll be doubling the size of the document, and if there are a lot of tags in the file it might even be problematic to save the target file in the first place. 
 
You might be able to do this on the sdlxliff itself using regex... but it might be tricky depending on the content. There may even be other workarounds using the Word bilingual file but all are going to have complications. Even editing the source to contain duplicate segments and then translate alternate segments only maybe.
