Studio 2017 keeps freezing/crashing

This was no great problem until yesterday, i.e. about two months after the problem first emerged, as I merely had to use the 2015 version still installed on my machine.

However, I suddenly had a licensing issue yesterday and had to reset and re-enter the activation code, installation ID and activation certificate.

Studio 2017 now "works" as it had been doing before, but 2015 asks me for a licence which appears no longer to exist.

I really don't see any great difference between the two versions, and would prefer just to go back to the 2015 version, at least until the next reformat of this machine.

A pleasant evening to all,

Andy Birch

  • Hi Andy,

If you upgrade then you effectively replace 2015 with 2017 and no longer have an entitlement to use 2015. If you don't physically return the 2015 licence from the product then it will continue to work until you need to re-licence it which will not be possible.

On the differences... there are significant differences between 2015 and 2017 and if you don't see them then you must only be using a fraction of what the product is capable of. wrote an interesting blog article a whole ago showing the main differences between the versions since 2009:

  • Dear Paul,
    Thank you for your reply.
I am sure that the 2017 version is capable of many splendid and wondrous things, considering the cost of the upgrade.
However, extolling its virtues in the context of my complaint is like enthusing about low-rev torque, acceleration and cornering ability in the presence of a wonky starter motor and slipping clutch.
To Trados/SDL's credit, this is only the second occasion in more than two decades as a user that I have had to report a glitch.
The previous one was a compatibility issue concerning Workbench and Windows 2000. I submitted an e-mail and received a phone call about 20 minutes later. The technician then spent a further ten minutes talking me through possible solutions, and we sorted it all out satisfactorily. Those were the days.
    Best regards,
    Andy Birch

that it meant you would be interested in an answer.  I wouldn't have mentioned anything otherwise.
