Machine translation (TMX file) not inserted during translation (Studio 2017)

 Hello everyone,

This morning I installed Studio 2017 on my workstation (pre-production testing). We currently use Studio 2014.

Everything seems great, except that I can't seem to get machine translation working as it did in 2014. Normal matches from our translation memories are inserted, but when there aren't any, the machine translation isn't inserted (or displayed in results). Studio switches straight to the Fragment Matches window).

I can, however, find the machine translated context in the concordance search.

I have tried re-upgrading the TMX files using Studio 2017 (the previous upgrade was done using 2014), but to no avail.

I suspect this is probably linked to the implementation of fragment searching, and that there's probably an option somewhere that I can fiddle with. But so far, no luck. Has anyone encountered this issue?

Thanks,

Will

  • Update: I've worked around it by changing the TU creator so that the segment is no longer recognized as automated translation content. But I suspect there's a "proper" way of doing it!
  • Hi William,

I suspect (have not tested) that this behaviour of saving the status AT in your TM doesn't happen anymore so this may be a problem linked to 2014. So your workaround is probably the best one. You could probably export to TMX and upgrade again as the AT status won't be retained in the TMX and that may do the trick too.

However, I'm also a little confused by your question because you seem to be expecting Machine Translation results and yet you are finding them in your TM? So do we need to answer the question on how to get Machine Translation inserted or not?

    Regards

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your answer. The workaround works as a makeshift fix for me, but I can't really get colleagues who don't know what a text editor is to go fiddling around with a TMX each time they use MT... What's particularly interesting is that while the MT segments may not be recognized as machine translation by Studio, they aren't inserted as "human" translations either, which seems weird to me!

The machine translated content is indeed available by TMX. It's Moses output provided by the Commission's MT@EC system which emails the translator a TMX to add to their project. In Studio 2014, the segments are picked up and recognized as machine translation by Studio, which is very handy... (I don't think the problem here is 2014, as I tried recreating the Studio TM from the initial TMX, which made no difference.

    Best regards,
    Will
  • You can try to import the TMX file into xBench. Just import it and export it under a different name. No special settings, don't remove dublicates. I regulary use this method with TMX files producing problems. The result is normally a TMX file that is smaller (just in size, not in the number of segments) and that is easily imported into Studio.

    Best regards
    Siegfried
  • I would be interesting to see a small example of the TMX content.
As per Siegfried's comment it seems it may be some 'intrestingly formatted' TMX...
  • I don't have (and can't install) xBench, unfortunately...

I can't share yesterday's file, but I've created a new one (same issue) with the least sensitive text imaginable (I wanted to add attachments, but it doesn't seem possible. Sorry for the wordy post!)...

  • Hi Will,

You could also use SDLTMConvert as this allows you to change the creation settings without having to edit a TMX in a text editor.

  • Hi Will,

I can't reproduce this problem.  I created a short video so you can see what I'm doing and perhaps this will help you explain what I need to do in order to understand the issue properly.

  • Hi again Paul,

Thanks for this. Your inability to reproduce the problem actually gave me an idea, which seems to have sorted the problem (though I don't strictly know why). I created a fresh project (instead of using an existing one as I was earlier) in Studio 2017, and it worked perfectly...

Thank you everyone for your help!
