Adding project memories to a new project

Hello everyone,

 

Further to a conversation with , I thought the following would be useful to others who don't understand what project memories are, or how they are created...

 

Here is a screenshot of where the settings are for adding project memory/ies to a new project:

It depends what is selected in the Task Sequence line. You will see above that 'Prepare without project memory' is selected. If you select one of the other 'Task Sequence' options from the dropdown menu, project memory/ies automatically get added:

NB: one project memory is added PER MAIN MEMORY.

There is also a custom option which allows you to select how you want your project to be created:

So, the project TMs are added according to the settings used in the Project Preparation window, when creating a New Project.

  • Thanks  , always good to get an explanation on things like this.  I'd just add a couple of things:

    • the custom task feature is only available in the Professional version, so FL licence holders won't have this
    • the main reasons for using a Project TM are things like;
      • you have a huge TM and only want to share a TM that is relevant to the Project.  When you use this option the Project TM is populated with matches found from the Main TM based on the search settings you use.  So the default would be 70% matches and above.
      • you want a "scratch pad" TM.  So you create the Project TM and then only work with this between you and your colleagues and then only update your Main TM once you have a fully signed-off and completed Project

    Hi Paul,

    Yes indeed, project TMs are really useful once one has figured out how they function and what they are useful for.

    Another point I've been reminded of recently by Bruce Campbell is that the following has to be highlighted for Translation Results to appear from both project and main TM:

    and/or the main and/or project TM has to be (un)ticked as Enabled in the memory list under Project settings>Language Pairs>All Language Pairs>Translation Memory and Automated Translation.

    Also, this has to be done individually to each project unless the project has been created either based on an existing project/template with the settings required, or on the Default template with Profile settings = those already made under File>Options (which is what happens if you create just a project from scratch).

    Final note, the project settings always overrule the same settings under File>Options.
