Cannot Turn Tag Protection Off

Hi Everyone,

I am using Studio 2017 Freelance Plus and despite a lot of exciting new features it has also been a bumpy ride so far.

This time my problem is that every now and then, in the middle of translating I get a "Protected tags cannot be edited" error. I may just be trying to add tags to a fuzzy match or even edit around tags. From then on it becomes impossible to work.

I have so far not been able to turn this off. When I go to the Advanced ribbon there's a locked icon next to Protect tags and nothing happens when I click it. I tried going to keyboard shortcuts and defining a keyboard shortcut for Tag Protection, but if it is meant to toggle - not just turn protection on - it doesn't toggle back off. Most of the time exiting Studio and restarting works. But sometimes it takes several times.

Any ideas?

    Hi Yeşim,

    Someone might be able to answer this question with a little more information, such as:

    Have you tried a Windows Repair on Studio via Control Panel>All programs... ?

    What filetype / original file format is this?

    Is this part of a project that came to you as a package?

    How are you trying to add the tags?

    You're not actually trying to delete the tags?

    Good try on looking for a workaround via keyboard shortcuts. Another question that might lead to a workaround for you is what do you have selected here:

    If I remember correctly, selecting 'Show formatting but hide recognised formatting tags' unprotects the tags that are no longer visible.

    I doubt this will help you, though. When I'm working I always have full tag text visible and the item highlighted in blue selected above. That won't help you either...

    I've never experienced tag protection being impossible to unlock. 

    I hope someone out there can shed some light on this for you...

    Hi,
    I am having the exact same problem. It is very annoying, as I sometimes get an sdlxliff file that is already translated to proof or edit, but if the TM happens to already have a match that is better than the proffered translation, and there are tags involved, if I try to click on Apply Translation, I get the error message you describe. I've tried unlocking the Protect Tags setting, but it will not budge. I end up having to read the translation in the TM and manually type it into the segment working around the tags of course. Also, when I translate, my agency has the original language in the target language segment by default, which I am then to type over. But again if there's a close or even exact match in the TM, it will not replace the segment if there are tags involved, but instead it makes the (in my case) German text a 100% match too! and then continues on down the text, sometimes doing this numerous times before I can stop it. Extremely annoying!!! Is there some default setting that controls this Protect Tags setting? I've never found exiting Studio and restarting has ever helped. I just end up going back through my text and making sure no 100% German matches snuck through and of course looking through the matches to find the real one to then manually type it into my text.

    Would love some help on this!

    Hi Alison,
    I hate to come across as totally uninformed, but how do you get to the screen you're showing? I remember seeing it once upon a time, but for the life of me cannot find it now....I see it is under "Options", but how do you get to that?

    Hi Ruth,

    No probs! I was totally uninformed when I first started using Trados TagEditor then SDL Trados Studio, maybe terrified would have been a better description for my first attempts, over 10 years ago... but now I love it! Like learning to drive but much more complicated to start off with...

    Left-click on 'File' top left of your Studio screen (at the farthest left on the top Ribbon bar).
    Near the bottom you will see 'Options', left-click on that.
    Then the window that opens gives you access to hundreds of settings but this one is easy to find, it's the top one on the left-hand list, 'Editor'.
    Then, where you see 'Formatting display style:' there's a rectangle next to it with a dropdown arrow at the far right.
    Left-click on the arrow and the 3 item list will drop down for you to choose which you prefer. This affects the main translation window itself (in which you type your translation).

    Turns out the one you suggested having highlighted is the one I had highlighted. I've changed it now to what you prefer, just to see what happens. The strange thing in my case is that I only have problems with tag protection on files from one client, and not even always then. But when it does happen, it is very annoying. Also, I haven't figured out how to turn off tag protection, clicking on the appropriate icon does nothing. My IT person at that client has also tried everything, but evidently no one else has this problem, so they haven't been able to figure it out either. She suggested I contact SDL..... but so far no one from there has answered....

    Alison, many thanks for your reply and suggestions and sorry for not replying back earlier.

    Despite my frustration and the restarts not working at the time my problem never repeated itself. I have been playing with Studio settings a lot these last couple of weeks, but the problem stopped before that. And as far as I am aware, there was no update to the software, I did not repair or reinstall Studio either.

    Even though the problem is not happening at the moment I am going to write a little about my work environment so as to document it here, and for others.

    I use Windows 10. My settings for tags is always show tags and no formating. Also, I like to work with Tag ID's.

    I am not sure if this problem was happening with one file type but most of my work is .docx, .inx and .txml files.

    I usually prepare the files with *copy source to target* so as to have the tags in the target.

    However most of my work is into Turkish which means that the syntax is very different from my source languages and that I may need to move tags around. Also fuzzies come with a lot of tag differences. With new text I usually type around tags, with fuzzies I use ctrl +, or highlight ctrl + click.

    But like Ruth is experiencing, when this problem happens I can't copy a fuzzy match, or the tags from the source.

    Ruth, sorry to hear that you are experiencing the same problem. Since you said it happened with files from the same client I am wondering if they are processing the files with another CAT software? That is the case with my .txml files.
