Word File can not be opened, because the content causes errors. (Word 2007 and Trados 2017)

I am having a serious problem with all Word files that cannot be opened. I work with Trados Studio 2017 and when I export a translated word file I get the error: Problem with the content. File can not be opened, because the content causes errors.

Details: unknown error
Position: component:/word/document.xml, row: 2, column: 271900

I had the same problem with a word file from our translation agency. But the translator could open the file without problems. Than I asked the translator to save the file again and sent it again, after that I could open it.

Is that a setting problem with word or trados?

We work with word 2007. And the problem occurs with files who have special template.

  • Hi ,

Did you try using "Open and Repair" in Word? Sometimes doing this to the source file can help with issues like that. Also try and test with both versions of the DOCX filter.

If the problem is the table of contents then perhaps remove it from the source, translate the file again, and then regenerate the table of contents in the target file afterwards.

    Regards

  • Hello Paul,
thank you for your answer. Yes I have tried the Open and Repair - Function. But the same message is shown. When I try to open and repair via Makro it shows a run time error code 6102.

"Also try and test with both versions of the DOCX filter." What do you mean with DOXC filter?
An opening wiht WordPad is possible but then the layout is missing.

"If the problem is the table of contents then perhaps remove it from the source, translate the file again, and then regenerate the table of contents in the target file afterwards."
Thats what we do now. But I dont think that this should be the final solution, because trados usualy doesnt have problems with the content table does it?

Our translation agency doesnt have such problems with that file .
After she saved the document again, I was able to open the file too. The translation agency works with Trados 11 (Word 17) and the individual translator works with Trados 2015 and Word 2016.

As your agency has no problems with a more recent version of Word it's always possible that the problem is with Word and not Studio in this case?  Word 2007 is pretty old these days!

If you look in your filetypes (File -> Options -> Filetypes) you'll see there are two DOCX filetypes.  The one that gets used for new projects is the one on top.  So switch the order and try the other one.

It's certainly not the desirable solution but we are trying to resolve an issue that does not normally happen.  As you have already discovered, the problem could be your version of Word.
