A return package can only be created if you have received a package in the first place.  It contains the translated bilingual file (sdlxliff) and some metadata in another file, all inside a file with the extension *.sdlrpx.  This *.sdlrpx file is essentially a zip file so you can open it and see what's inside in two ways:

• Add .zip to the end of the filename and you can doubleclick it in Windows to see what's in there
• Use the PackageReader from the appstore: http://appstore.sdl.com/app/packagereader/145/
  
  • this needs updating to support 2017 by the developer ( Asbjørn Riis-Knudsen )
  • if you already have it then it does seem to be fine with 2017

Now, a more important question is why do you want to open it?  You already have the project on your computer so you can see the files that you used to create the return package already.  The only person who can open this in Studio will be the person who sent you the original package that you translated.  The return package will update their project with your translation.

I have the same issue. To the last question above, I want to open it so that I can check it. I always double check attachments and zip files before I press send. It has happened more than once that the recipient of my return package has had problems with the package, e.g. empty translation column, but I have no way to verify that it is OK on my side.

Or you can unzip the return package and check the contents…

Thank you for your reply. I missed this info that was provided in the previous message.

I have tried PackageReader and could open the package but not read the sdlxliff, either in PackageReader or by clicking on "Open in Trados". I get to the Trados package screen but then Trados does not want me to open the sdlxliff because I created it myself. However, the method of adding the zip extension works perfectly. Thank you for demystifying the "package" as actually just a zip. It would have been better if SDL just called it that!

It’s a common thing everywhere. All packages from RWS (not only return packages), and I believe it’s the same thing re. memoQ…, are actually ZIP files. Having a different extension lets Windows open these disguised ZIP files in a particular way.

And same thing applies to many popular extension files: Word documents (DOCX), Excel spread-sheets (XLSX), PowerPoint presentation (PPTX), Visio, AutoCad…

I see, yes that makes sense, if it had a .zip extension it would not automatically launch Studio.
