My translation memory only updates when I click on 'update main TM' or 'update project TM' in Batch Tasks. I seem to have everything selected that I should. Could anyone suggest what is wrong? Thanks!

Only updating when you run the Main TM Batch Tasks makes sense because you are using Project TMs when you create your projects. This means that a new TM is created for every project you work on and added to a folder called Tm in the projects folder. That project TM will be updated as you work, but your Main TM will only get updated when you finalize the project or run the update Main TM batch task.
You can create projects without doing this is you select Prepare, as opposed to Prepare with Project TM.
If you need to run the updated Project TM batch task to populate the Project TM then perhaps you are not confirming your segments during translation?
