Windows 10 Creators Update, version 1703 and SDL Studio 2017 CU 5 (Build 14.0.5889.5)

To whom it may concern

Yesterday I have received on my Win 10 desktop and laptop machines an automatic “kind” message coming from Microsoft requesting to set my privacy settings to be able to install the newest full Windows 10 Creators Update, when available for my machines.

This morning I received the usual message to restart my Desktop PC to install the downloaded upgrades.

As I had time to do it, I decided to install the new Win 10 Creators Update, Version 1703 that, in fact is a complete update of the OS, containing several internal enhancements.

Here I do not want to discuss the new Win 10 Creators features, but just to point out some Update installations steps and the subsequent operation of installed SW/Applications (namely, among others, SDL Studio 2017 CU 5).

  • When starting the update process, Microsoft tells us that the process “Will take a while” (in fact it is a quite long “while”, depending of the machine you are working on) and that the PC will restart several times.
  • The process is substantially automatic (as usual) and after the first stage you pass automatically to the second stage: “Working on downloaded updates”.
  • This second stage is quite slow until you get 50% (so, unless you have a second machine on which going on working, and unless you are attracted by a blue screen with a progressive percentage count, feel free to leave you PC alone (it will not feel sad/neglected [;)]) and to go out to buy newspapers, cigarettes (if you smoke), or whatever you need.
  • When the process gets 75% it will restart your PC without requesting any user intervention and will go on (slowly) until 100%.
  • When reaching 100%, and after having started Windows, a message kindly informs us that the subsequent phase will take several minutes and shows a couple of courtesy messages about security and new features.
  • At the end of the entire process you will get the same Desktop you had before, and all applications marked as “Automatic start” (e.g. antivirus, Skype, etc.) will be launched as usual.

After having completed Windows 10, Version 1703 Update I checked the operation of all installed important SW/Applications (e.g. SDL Studio 2017, Adobe InDesign, Acrobat Pro, etc.).

Regarding Studio 2017 CU 5 (Build 14.0.5889.5), and its functions, all worked properly as they worked before, even if I did not unregister it before carrying on the Win 10 Update (to be honest, I forgot to do it, so I suppose that is a not-vital step). No changes in views, list of projects, list of files, managing of TMs and TermBases. I cannot say anything about “cloud” features, as I never use them.

The same applies to other SW/Applications and all this is consistent to a communication I received from Microsoft when I queried if Windows 10 Creators will interfere with already installed SW/Applications.

So, at least in my case, the installation of Windows 10 Creators Update, Version 1703 did not generate any problem and I am able to go on working with SDL Studio 2017 without any problem (until subsequent evidence of the contary).

I hope this may help those who have doubts about installing the new Windows 10 Creators Update and its consequences on SDL Studio 2017.

After all, Microsoft is not a “killer” or a “criminal”, but just a (large and valuable) SW house, even if they try to direct us to their internal (and sometimes good) solutions.

I just installed today the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, aka Version 1709. I'm glad to report that everything is working fine in my PC. These major Windows upgrades (this is one of them) are tested, through a long participatory process, way before they're offered to the public, so no surprise there. Now, regarding SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 (14.1.6329.7) is working fine, and, guess what, it not only seems to be faster, it IS faster, and I can say the same of all Office applications. Much faster! Same with SDL MultiTerm Desktop. My advice to anyone using Windows 10: install it. Learn more about it here:

In my view, Windows 10 is the best OS ever! -I am a long time Windows user (and blogger), always an early adopter, since the times of Windows 3.1... :-)
