Translation memory, alignment tool, language cloud

 Hi,

I am really new to SDL Trados 2017 and have a few things I am stuck on at moment.

1. I have ticked update box on translation memory but despite this it does not store the new translation? It stored the first one but now no more?

2. In the alignment tool, I have been trying to align and save to translation memory, documents I translated before getting Trados. In the source text side there are sometimes 3/4 segments which need to merge so as to be equivalent to one target segment. But no segments will merge on the source side, as far as I can see?

3. My laptop crashed a couple of weeks ago and had to be factory reset so I am now wondering, if that happened again, would all of the adaptive translation work in language cloud be lost as it is not saved to a USB stick or is there a way of saving it external to Trados?

Really grateful for any help you can offer.

Thanking you in advance!

Irene

  • Hi

Great to see you here!  Looking at your questions a few things spring to mind:

There are two places you can do this.  In File -> Options or Project Settings.  If you created a new project after setting this update box in the project settings of the previous project then it is possible that your new project won't be set up like this.  It should set this update box by default, for the first TM you add but it's worth checking.  The way these settings work is that File -> Options apply settings to all new Projects.  Making changes in Project Settings applies only to the project you make the changes to.

If I'm off track here can you provide a little more detail about what you mean by not storing the new translation.  Do you mean the new segment in the same document?  Or a new document in the same project, or a new document in a new project?  Do you mean a new TM or the same TM you used already?

A little more information will help us understand the situation you are in and then we can provide a better answer to help.

The way this works is that you select the four on the left and then connect them to a single one on the right.  However, you cannot align 4 to 1 as the Studio alignment won't support this so the option will be greyed out.  You can do 3 to 1 like this (I know in this example they are not really supposed to be aligned...):

Then connection n:n gets you this:

You could perhap make use of WinAlign, the old alignment tool that you can still access in your Studio 2017 installation as this allows you to have far more flexibility.  So here I aligned 4 to 1 without any problems at all:

The problem is always filetype support with the older one, but there are workarounds.  So take a look at this article (towards the end) and you'll see how to find this application in your Studio installation and also how to tackle a workaround if needed:

It would not be lost because we store all your customisations in LanguageCloud specifically against your personal account.

  • Thank you very much, Paul!

With regards the translation memory, the only time I was making sure it was enabled was when the box came up for choosing to create or add a translation memory for new project. I had been trying with regards a new document in a new project and initially I was trying to use the same TM. In the meantime I have created 2 TMs as I thought the problem was maybe to do with first TM.
I have now gone into File -> Options and Project Settings. In the File option all I've found is: number of translation units per page, which I have increased to 200 and number of field values to show: 3. Then source font size: 10 and Target font size: 10.
I don't see any 'update' feature?

I have briefly looked at some of the alignment youtube tutorial but I think at minute if I get translation memory up and running, I would try to get it all done first of all the snail's way!!!! But is it in File on 'Legacy DTP Formats' that I click with regards WinAlign?

That makes a lot of sense with regards Language Cloud storage and is very reassuring!!!

Thank you very much for all your effort on my behalf.

    Kind regards

  • Hi

I'm sure this is a simple thing to sort out, but tricky when we can't see what you're doing!  So let's start with where the settings are updated for this.  Go to your Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> All Language Pairs -> Translation Memory and Automated Translation and make sure your TM is all enabled:

WinAlign is a separate application and this is started as explained in the article by running this program:

    c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\Winalign.exe

You do not start this by running anything inside Studio.

  • Thank you, Paul!

I have two USB sticks, where I have saved my translation memories onto. Using the first, I went through all the steps you had instructed with regards:
Go to your Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> All Language Pairs -> Translation Memory and Automated Translation and make sure your TM is all enabled. The TM was fine but language cloud would not let Concordance search be ticked on it.

In the other USB stick, it has some odd translation memories
    English - French sdltm
    English - German sdtlm
    English - Japanese sdltm
When I try to put in my usual translation memories, the message comes up that 'The translation provider does not support any language pair in this project or project template. Consider using any TM (Add TM) to add your translation memory.

I have tried to press the button on left saying reset to defaults, hoping language pairs will disappear, but to no avail.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Paul,

I just googled and watched a little of a you tube tutorial on ' Add and remove Trados studio language pairs'. I can't seem to find the other language pairs again and have put languages as German - English. I will try a document and see if I now have success saving it to translation memory!!! I'll let you know.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Paul,

I just pressed on Project settings and the odd language pairings are still there!! Can get rid of them as TM choices but not on the side as actual language choices.

Under file - options - language pairs, it says German - English now.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to Paul and let everyone know the solution we found!!!!

The translation memory has more than one page, so click on next page and you will see all that you have saved. I was only looking at the first page!!!!

I would doubt now that there will be anyone else with this problem but just in case, I thought it best to share solution!!!!

THANKS again, Paul, for all the immense patience and effort on my behalf.

    Kind regards

    Irene
