Setting up special characters in autotext/autosuggest/tokens, etc?

Hello,

Translating technical materials from Japanese to English, I have to localize a lot of the measurement symbols and special characters. Is there a way to quickly to this in Trados? Here's how one problematic segment looks:

Main culprits are the "phi" symbol which in Japanese is written as "φ" but our style guide has us write it as "ø" in English. Same with "℃" in Japanese is one character but "ºC" in English is two characters. Symbols like the Japanese asterisks "※" is written as "*" in English. There are many more. 

What I'd like to set up is autotext or autosuggest for symbols. This is difficult cuz it's only one character and I'd have to type the first letter of something to get its candidate to appear. 
I know I could use the Insert Symbol add-in, but I'd have to find those symbols first, put assign them to a speed-dial slot, and then remember the shortcut key for 10 different symbols. Ctrl+comma would be much better. 

Open to suggestions.

    Hi Keenan,

    Why not use the Regex AutoSuggest Provider for this? It's a brilliant plugin and I think it would resolve your problem quite nicely.

    Hey Paul,

    Becoming familiar with regular expressions was on my list of things to do this year so I'm pleased that its use may solve my problems. I've installed the add-in and looked at youtube videos you an English<->Spanish translator posted. She had some useful expressions for dates and times and you had a set of 6 digit numbers with different spacers. I can see such things being useful for product model numbers as I've turned off alphanumeric strings cuz I was getting too many false positives. (I've also just notice I made a mistake during the copy and paste.) However, for the question I've asked regarding symbols, I don't see how this is useful yet. In both videos, some input was necessary to call up the regex. You had to press "2" first before "200,000" came up. How would that work when the symbol is first? Like the Japanese is "φ180" but the english is "ø180". How would I make use of regex here? What would the rule look like for example?

    Also, if I was looking for "useful regular expressions for japanese<-->english translation" within the SDL community, where should I ask? Or if you had a list of useful expressions for translators, I'd love to see them.
