Studio 2015: JA characters in a text file (UTF-8) garbled when opened for translation

I have been translating similar files (Japanese text files encoded UTF-8 without BOM) all week. Yesterday it was fine. Today I simply added a new text file to the same project without changing any settings, prepared the file for JA to EN translation and opened it for translation, only to see all JA characters in the source file garbled. English characters are displayed properly. I deleted the XLIFF files and reloaded the text file; same problem. I closed and restarted Studio 2015 but problem is not solved. What should I do? Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

  • Hi ,

I can only think that there must be something in this new file affecting the encoding of the characters. What happens if you open this file on its own as a single file project? Is the content of this one different to the rest in any way, no encoding declaration, no BOM, characters already corrupt?

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, many thanks for the suggestions. Before reading your comment I rebooted the PC and created a single-document project with that one file, and it didn't work. The file was fine when opened with a text editor, no corruption. However, when I saved the text file with BOM and added to the project the problem was solved. Thanks again!
