SDL Studio 2017 – Adobe InDesign IDML file filter – Index entries tags/markers content

Good morning/afternoon to all,

I have a request for the SDL Studio “gurus”; well, in fact it is a quite technical query regarding the Adobe InDesign IDML file filter.

After having saved an INDD file to IDML format and loaded it in SDL Studio I obtained this result:

that, in fact is correct as usual, but the hidden content of the “Index entries markers/tags” have been interpreted by SDL Studio as inline tags:

Obviously, these tags are not editable and I have not found a way to “free” them for translation of editable content, even after having checked all possible/pertinent options

Have I to exclude the chance to edit the translatable content of these inline index entries tags, or is there a way to “unlock” them for translation?

Thank you for your advice.

Regards,

Claudio

  • Hi

I thought you may have got an answer from the many InDesign experts we see in the community but looks like you'll have to make do with me ;-)  I created a simple file with some index entries as you have explained:

If I open this in Studio (default settings) I see something similar to you, but as it's such a small file I can also see the Index that has been extracted at the bottom and these are all editable.  I can also filter on them using the advanced display filter like this:

This is quite helpful because now I can see only the index entries.

These are actually the text inside these as you can see... all inline tags as your example:

So if you find the Index Topics you should be able to edit them.  I'll just translate my sample file like this:

And then save the target and open it in InDesign you can see I have changed the index entries as per the "translation" in Studio:

So the trick is don't think about editing the tags because Studio can extract the text for you and present these in a separate row with the DSI of Index Topics.

    Hope this helps you?

    Regards

  • Hi Paul,

as usual, your suggestions and comments are really useful and you are a “great problem solver”.

In fact, I did not take into consideration to work on final generated Index entries, but I just focalized my attention to the “tags/markers” inside the text. Sometimes, the simplest ways may solve a problem... [:O]

In the sample file here below, after having translated the final generated Index entries, if I regenerate again the Index in Adobe InDesign, all works properly, even if the “tags/markers” inside the text remain unchanged, but this does not seem to be a problem, as something changed in the internal XML silesstructure of the IDML file (later, I willcheck where)

Thank you again for your help.
