Trados Studio 2017 SR1 Microsoft Office File Types

Trying to make sense of the Microsoft Office File types in SR1:

Questions:
1. Older Word 2007-2013 file type has now been removed.
What happens if I receive a package with that file type (for example from someone using Studio 2015) and I want to generate the target translation?

2. The newer Microsoft Power Point 2007-2016 file type has priority, but the newer Excel 2007-2016 file type does *not* have priority.
Was this on purpose? I was wondering why the older file type for Excel has priority.

VERY good point. Especially if the "Changes introduced in SR1" help topic says the following:

The following enhancements were made to Trados Studio file types:

    • The next generation Microsoft Excel file type is now out of beta and fully updated with real time preview.
    • We introduced the next generation of the Microsoft PowerPoint file type as beta with realtime preview.
    • It is now possible to translate embedded content from Microsoft Office files (e.g. charts) without the need to manually extract it from the source file. The embedded content is now automatically included in the translation file when opened in the Trados Studio Editor.
    • We introduced server-based file types for DOC, XLS, RTF.
    • We added support for notes for PPTX file type.

I actually tested this very scenario earlier today.  It seems to be fully compatible so you should have no problems.  My guess would be that it's still there under the hood but we want people to start using the new one going forward.

That's interesting and I also have the same thing.  I'm not sure why it's like this as I'm pretty sure it should have been the other way around.  Maybe  can shed some light on it?

  • Hi,

I would need to defer to  on the second question. On the first, I confirm that the old file type is still there but fully hidden in the UI so you can 1) open/process legacy projects but 2) not create new projects with the old file type anymore.

    Thanks
