Following your advice gave me the Sdl.Desktop.Platform.CommandBars.IActionService error, and your explanation on the linked page for how to fix that one led me to search in:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\Plugins
Where I found the TransPdf plugin in its packed and unpacked incarnations. I renamed Plugins to Plugins_old, as I'm happy enough starting from scratch app-wise, and now everything's fine. Two thumbs up.
So basically, your original solution was completely correct in terms of the root cause of the error, but I hadn't realised that there were two more possible hiding places for SDL Apps.
