Very disappointed at SDL Trados Studio 2017 (SR1)

I've been using Trados (and teaching to fellow colleagues and at the university) since 2009 and I have to say that I'm very disappointed at version 2017, particularly SR1. For the third time this semester I had to move to memoQ to work in a moderately large project (+30,000 words) because Trados goes very slow with a 80-page Word document. Whenever dealing with large segments (300 words), I had to copy the text on Word and then paste in Trados because it was impossible to work with. With larger documents, I can't even begin to tell you how slow it goes. I had no problems whatsoever with memoQ regarding this. And I had no problem whatsoever with 2015 and older versions of Studio either. I fear that the company is paying so much attention to machine translation and other things that they're doing things the wrong way for the users that love this tool for the everyday tasks that a freelance translator has to undertake. And let me tell you, I HATE to have to deal with these projects in memoQ, but I have no choice.

To make matters even worse, I updated to 2017 SR1 at the University where I'm teaching translation technology in post-graduate courses (University of Buenos Aires) and now I can't even show the first steps of working with Trados with the same sample file that Trados has provided us for training since the creation of Studio. I have recorded a short video to show you the problem: http://bit.ly/2fynr4O.

I hope you can help me.

Thanks in advance!

  • Maybe disable the fragment matching as well. Perhaps when handling the large segments that you mention the work Studio is having to go through to match and list all the results could be the cause of the slowness. Worth disabling the fragment matching as this is also set by default.

On the large documents I'm not sure. If it was the analysis then I would have said fragment matching for sure. So disable it for analysis and then switch it back on if you wish to use it. But if it's just the document and with all the other options turned off it's still slower than 2015 then perhaps you can share the file with us?

    Regards
