Which processor should I select for my new laptop?

I am about to buy a new laptop for freelance translation work. After two PCs that have been somewhat sluggish with Studio and GroupShare in particular, I am hoping to get things right this time! Having upgraded to fibre broadband and opted for a 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM, I now just need to choose a processor. Is there much difference between an i7-7500U and an i7-7700HQ Quad Core processor with regard to using Studio 2017? I'm reluctant to go for the latter without knowing if it really will make a major difference as I will end up spending nearly double. Thanks for any advice.

  • Hi

As we discussed before, the SSD is the place you get the most benefit.  But I'm hoping someone like  or  who do know a lot about hardware will have some better advice for you.

    Regards

  • Hi
    Thanks for calling me :)

Well, as Paul says, all performance starts and dies with a decent SSD in your computer.
Your programs AND your TBs/TMs should be placed on a SSD.
In my case I have two SSDs in my Dell desktop. When I bought it (January 2016), this was the most performant desktop, offered by Dell.
It is a XPS with Intel i7 6700k, 24 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD factory installed SSD with Windows 10. Another 240 GB SSD was installed by myself, where now all TMs/TBs are stored.

When you're looking for a laptop, take the strongest processor you can afford, but only if the computer has a SSD. Otherwise better downgrade the processor, but upgrade to SSD and more RAM (however, it is better to buy and add RAM on your own, than to pay the producer, as this is always much more expensive).
If you are buying a laptop, another crucial parameter is the screen (not the graphic card, as even the Intel Graphics should usually be enough, although a dedicated graphics card is always better). What you need is a IPS, MVA, VA or similar, BUT NOT a TN screen. And the minimum resolution mus be at least Full HD (1920 x 1080). Everything less than this is not suitable for work.

Of course this is only my opinion :)

    Best regards, Jerzy
