Trados 2017: Unintended entry in hidden segments

Somehow I unintentionally and mysteriously entered a few letters in a hidden segment in Trados (shown via "Verify" - Filter - "All content" instead of "All segments") which then apparated in the target file and spoilt the text. Until the translation agency I sent the finished sdlxliff to pointed this out I didn't even know that there is something like hidden segments.

How could this happen? A keyboard shortcut? My shortcut list (in "File" -- "Options") doesn't show anything that hints at entries in hidden segments and I didn't set any keyboard shortcuts on my own, so all there is are Trados standard keyboard shortcuts.

Is it possible to generally block those hidden segments from unintended entries like you can lock individual "real" segments? If the translation agency had a way of doing that before sending out the translation package - all the better!

Thanks for your feedback.

Best wishes

  • Hi ,

I'd be very surprised if you did this. Can you share a file with this problem?

    Regards

  • Hi All,

This happened to me recently, or rather to the translator whose work I was proofreading in Studio. It was a Word-based SDLXLIFF file so as usual I created and visually verified the Target file before delivering, to check layout. The first 3 letters of the first word of a segment had somehow been typed into the hidden content immediately prior to a segment, as well as in the Target segment, and came up as a spelling error in Word. I was able to display 'All Content' then find and delete those 3 letters.

If I could remember which job it was, I'd email the file to you Paul but I haven't a clue! As I said, it was original format Word and the only additional feature here was that there was a tag in the same hidden 'segment' and I had to delete the tag to be able to remove all 3 letters, then add it again.

In many years, this is the first time this has happened unintentionally to me. It is not normally possible to type into the hidden content without first making it visible via the 'All content' display filter. (Indeed, the only way to insert text into any filtered-out content is via autopropagation.)

    All the best,
    Ali
